  12. study method

  13. study method • evaluate, identify breakdowns, inform design • online user study • friends who want help us improve greenBean • 20 mins, 15 completes • demographics, tasks, qualitative feedback • success : evaluate changes, inform design • abandon: where breakdown occurred • 3 task given in random order

  14. study method task 1 • Scenario:You want to find out your personal cumulative impact of your shopping choices to see how “green” you have been overall. You have already entered your Safeway loyalty card information so greenBean can track what you have purchased over time. • Task: Check your greenBean score and score breakdown. • Validation question: Please note the following: Which week in this month did you score the most "beans?"

  15. study method task 2 • Scenario: You are allergic to peanuts and you need to find granola that will be safe to eat. • Task: First, use the “Preferences” section of greenBean to identify peanuts as an allergen. Then use greenBean search to find a safe Granola bar. • Validation question: Please note the following: Is Udi’s an allergy safe granola product?

  16. study method task 3 • Scenario: You’re at the grocery store shopping and you need to get laundry detergent. You found Kirkland detergent but want to evaluate it against other detergents available in the store. • Task:Scan the product barcode to look up more details about Kirkland detergent. Lookup it’s Ratings. Compare it to other detergents to help you decide which kind to buy. • Validation questions: How many user reviews were there for the product? Which product has the lowest price/unit?

  17. results and discussion

  18. results and discussion participants age group of 20 -25. A tech savvy age group Android? Product search in store? compelled need 3.7/5 towards being environmentally friendly. (1: Don’t care, 5: Strongly feel)

  19. results and discussion lowest time to complete and the smallest failure rate task 1: check score have their score both visually and quantitatively “bean” metaphor : confusing mean time (success): 0.46 mins interface helped me (success) : 4.4/5 “<< Score” instead of “Score” 80% of them are confirmed “This was very simple and easy to navigate” “What exactly do the "beans" mean? “ “I thought it was kind of confusing that there was a "score" button… just took me back…”

  20. results and discussion task 2 : set allergy preference and search not familiar with the Android, 67% success, intuitive to find preferences: 3.1/5 - ok, include on home as well long time: 2 stage task mean time (success): 3.08 mins interface helped me (success) : 3/5 70% confirmed “… Also the check box that says apply filters is very ambiguous.” improve ON/OFF filter presentation Participants could find the contextual help in the Menu Where did you look for help? “In the screen that is prompted when you push the menu key. Next to the preferences button.”

  21. results and discussion task 3 : scan and compare products scan new interaction Success only 60%, lower the mean time task is rated high for ease of use mean time (success): 1.30 mins 4.2/5 for the product information page interface helped me (success) : 3.8/5 64% and 50% confirmed sort with tab did not suit the user mental model “… only problem that I had was with the buttons sorting because it was too small.” • “Fairly easy. Although it took me some time to find the "similar products" button” easy with hiccups with “Search similar”

  22. recommendations

  23. recommendations • home screen: • clean, well aligned list may be • expose important functions • score: • quantitative values also • “<< SCORE” instead of “SCORE”

  24. recommendations • preferences: • make it visible on home as well, do not hide • Filter to be ON by default • Filter should indicate Allergens, • product Information: • search similar : give it a right place • ingredients to be listed as “list” not paragraph. • “sort by”: tabs not effective.

  25. summary

  26. Summary Overall • … logo is given more importance than the functionality...itself. It would have been great if all the buttons were lined upin order of usage (barcode, search, list, etc) one below the other. •  The filter systemwas the most awkward part. • Ingredientsshould be a list and not a paragraph. • I didn’t like the hidden options and preferences. •  The layout looks really professional, and the information obtained from searching was very complete and useful. Also the "check my score" feature is a good one- so people can see the overall effect they have having by choosing greener products. •  For the most, part it was easy to use. I like the buttons on the home screen. They are very clear. I like the instructions below the bar code scan. They helped a lot. • There is certainly a strong need for this kind of an application.
