  5. What does it do • The adrenal gland produces multiple hormones • Each hormone effects bodily functions such as blood sugar levels and light-headedness

  6. The major hormones • Glucocorticoids • Mineralocorticoids • Catecholamines - Epinephrine - Norepinephrine

  7. Glucocorticoids • Known as cortisol • Controls blood glucose levels

  8. Mineralocorticoids • Controls sodium levels in the body • Prevents you from feeling light-headed

  9. Catecholamines • Epinephrine • Norepinephrine • Fight or flight reactions • Adrenaline and Noradrenaline

  10. Waterhouse-Friderichsensyndrome • Failure of Adrenal Gland due to bleeding • Due to bacterial infection • Shock and acute failure of gland • Death if untreated

  11. Addison's disease • When adrenal gland under produces • Can lead to hemorrhaging and hormonal imbalances • Autoimmune disorder

  12. Fun facts • Derived from latin words for “near Kidneys”, not adrenaline • Works with pituitary gland and hypothalamus
