  7. A very able year group… • 108 students new to the school, from over 20 different schools • 142 students from Coopers’ in Year 11 • Around 250 in the yeargroup • AIM: 60% of AS grades at A or B • Seating plan in tutor groups

  9. The Sixth Form Centre… • 10 dedicated classrooms • A learning zone with 50+ PCs • A quiet-study area • 3 flat-screen TVs with SKY TV • Wireless broadband throughout • A state of the art ‘Common Room’ • A dining and café area • Customised lockers • The school library

  10. Academic Expectations… • To continue with 4 AS Levels all year • To progress into Year 13 typically… Work at ‘A-C’ grade in at least 3 AS Levels If effort grades are lacking and/or academic grades are at ‘E’ or ‘U’ then the place in the 6th Form is at serious risk

Enrichment programme… • Every Monday afternoon for 4 ‘semesters’ each consisting of 6 weeks 18 Electives: • 2 Academic: General Studies, Critical Thinking • 2 semi-independent: Volunteering, mentoring, • 16 teacher led: Cookery, BootCamp, Fishing Equality of opportunity, fair selection, inevitable disappointment

Student financial support… ‘The 16-19 Bursary Scheme’ is open to: • Astudent in care or a student who has been in care, if the student is in receipt of income support or a disabled young person in receipt of certain government allowances, then they will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year. • A student who in Year 11 was in receipt of free school meals, or is entitled to receive free school meals in Year 12. Students could receive financial help to pay for travelling costs to school (up to £270) and to pay for any books not provided by the school. • A student/family experiencing sudden and immediate financial hardship Continued receipt of the Bursary will be dependent on regular attendance and compliance with the School’s Code of Good Conduct.

  15. Teaching and Learning… • Transition to independent learning • Importance of Homework (at least 2 hours per night and 4-6 hours at weekends) • Self motivation in class / no spoon-feeding • Being proactive (student focus, not teacher) • Assessment for Learning

  16. d Assessment… • ALPS: Target Grades – given to students today • Assessment data: (4 times a year) • A-U grade for Attainment, followed by a/b/c • 1-5 for effort • End of year reporting • Academic Interventions / Cause for Concern process • Predicted grades • Mock examinations: MARCH - Highly successful

  17. Communication.. • ‘Intouch’ – email to parents for letters • Email distribution lists to students • Assessment reporting (given to the student) • 6th Form Website • Mentor – first contact point • Report to school reception for any meetings (which need to be pre-arranged)

  18. Key issues… • Transition to being just 1 of 450+ highly able students • Mobile phone policy • Inability to provide lockers to all students or parking on school site • Parents: No entry to school site AFTER 8am or BEFORE 4pm • Security / Personal belongings / CCTV use • Leave of absence – driving lessons / dentists /doctors – change in government directive ‘only in exceptional circumstances’ • Importance of notes for absence (future UCAS and job references) • Leaving the school site – fire regulations • Use of ICT

  20. Work outside Coopers… • Maximum of 8 hours a week • Positive benefits of paid employment • Negative correlation between employment and academic attainment • Paid employment at examination times

  21. PSHE… • Dedicated programme of PSHE days • 1st day next Tuesday – teambuilding day • Programme intended to support school ethos • Timed to coincide with important transition points • Focused on personal development, future university / job applications
