  2. What did the New Deal do? Programs to provide relief & help the country recover from the Great Depression p. 712 1. Social Security Act -$ for retired workers -$ for unemployed -payroll taxes fund this program today 2. Tennessee Valley Authority (p. 706) – helped poor farmers in NC & TN 3. AAA – paid farmers to cut production Changes in the expectations of government

  3. Changes in the expectations of government • What did the New Deal do? • How come some people did not like the New Deal? • 4. CCC – jobs for young men 18 – 25 • Some thought FDR was abusing his power • Some thought govt was interfering too much in business & people’s personal lives • 1 powerful opponent was Huey Long • he wanted more help for families instead of businesses

Changes in the expectations of government • Why did FDR try to change the Court system? • Different people began to lead the government • The courts ruled that some of his programs were unconstitutional • FDR wanted to add more judges who would agree with his plans: COURT PACKING(go up to 15 instead of 9) • MANY people disagreed with this idea, hurt his popularity • Frances Perkins – 1st woman to be a Secretary in the Cabinet (Labor) • Eleanor Roosevelt – FDR’s wife who became his eyes and ears to problems & supported women’s causes
