  2. Abstract As industry adoption of grid computing accelerates, GGF must rise to a new level of leadership based on a foundation of clear a clear mission, strategic imperatives and objectives supported by improvements to the way in which we communicate, collaborate, and operate. To that end, the GGF Steering Group embarked on an extensive 10 week process to review the GGF strategy and operating model. This document outlines the recommended changes to the GGF mission and operating model resulting from the 10-week strategy process. The analysis of the data along with the recommended action were discussed and agreed to during the January 2005 GFSG face-to-face meeting.

  3. As industry adoption of grid computing accelerates, GGF must rise to a new level of leadership Improve communication Increase collaboration with other areas of the ecosystem GGF Accelerate decision making & standards development Continue to foster an international grid community Refine our mission and objectives

  4. To determine our leadership strategy, the GFSG embarked on an intensive 10 week process to understand stakeholder requirements and GGF future directions Workstreams / Activities Oct-22 Oct-29 Nov-5 Nov-12 Nov-19 Nov-26 Dec-3 Dec-10 Dec-17 Dec-24 • Current State Assessment • Interview Stakeholders • Understand Existing GGF Strategy • Understand Stakeholder Landscape • Vision/Mission & Value Proposition Definition • Analyze other Standards Organizations • Understand Grid Ecosystem • Define and Validate GGF Strategic Direction • Operating and Governance Model Definition • Assess Current GGF Operating Model • Identify Opportunities and Gaps • Define To-Be Operating Model • Implementation Plan Development Validation Sessions Holiday Operating model Workshop (Face-to-Face)2 Mission / Objectives Workshop (Face-to-Face)1 Validation Sessions Jan 2005 3 day GFSG f2f Discuss & Decide Feb/Mar 2005 Validation & Public Comment • Approximately 20 members of the GFSG and GFAC met with the external consulting team at SC2004 for a day long workshop • Mark Linesch, Charlie Catlett, Bill Nitzberg, Steve Crumb and David Martin met with the external consulting team to discuss alternatives and develop a proposed operating model

  5. 6. Community interviews provided clarity regarding the key value drivers of our diverse stakeholders Stakeholder Value Drivers • Commercialization of nascent technology • Development for scientific applications Government Academia:Computer Science • Open exchange of ideas • Evolvement of grid standards • Open exchange of ideas • Implementable standards • Reference implementations Academia:Applied Sciences • Implementable standards • Reference implementations • Use case / ROI models • Collaborate with and bring value to users Vendors • Implementable standards • Reference Implementations • Use cases / ROI models • Open exchange of ideas Industry Note: Based on average interview responses from 38 interviewees across GGF stakeholder groups

  7. Interviews indicated that GGF must evolve to meet the changing needs of stakeholders as grid technology matures Overall Findings • The vast majority of stakeholders view GGF as the critical focal point for grid technology, and believe it has the potential for widespread influence • Despite its recognized potential, GGF needs to more clearly define its mission and communicate more effectively internally and externally • GGF’s is also challenged to define its role in a complex ecosystem that includes diverse stakeholders • Effective partnerships with research and industry along with standards, software and consortia organizations are required. • Finally, the current GGF operating model and processes need evolutionary improvement in order to meet these challenges Note: Based on average interview responses from 38 interviewees across GGF stakeholder groups

  8. Standards Community Operations Stakeholder requirements led to the refinement of the GGF mission Leading the pervasive adoption of grid computing for research and industry Defining grid specifications that lead to broadly adopted standards and interoperable software Building a broad international community for the exchange of ideas, experiences, requirements, and best practices Ensuring ongoing support of our mission and communication of our progress

  9. Community Standards Operations The GGF Mission is enabled by strategic imperatives that focus on community and standards supported by efficient operations Strategic Imperatives Foster and manage unique communities of interest to capture requirements, share best practices, further research, and accelerate adoption + Develop architectures and specifications in collaboration with industry stakeholders that lead to broadly adopted standards with interoperable software implementations + Communicate GGF value to our community, key partners, sponsors, industry analysts and press, while ensuring funding to accomplish our mission through sponsorship, grants, and event management

  10. GGF’s operating model is designed to support our mission and strategic imperatives while continuing to foster a growing international community • Maintain a volunteer-based and community-oriented culture. • Define clear roles and responsibilities for GGF leadership functions that enable accountability and oversight • Ensure success and effectiveness measures are developed and visible to the community • Improve the alignment of international interests to ensure balanced decision making • Ensure sufficient funding to execute the GGF mission.
