Perceptions… • If you can think back, prior to the Spanish visit, what were your perceptions/ideas of who the Spanish were? • Where did these perceptions come from? • After they were here, did they change? How? • What are the perceptions that people might have of Americans? (regardless of their validity or accuracy)

Symptoms: Unwarranted criticism of the culture and people Heightened irritability Constant complaints about the climate and food Continual offering of excuses for staying indoors Utopian ideas concerning one's home culture Continuous concern about the purity of water and food Fear of touching local people Refusal to learn the language

  6. Preoccupation about being robbed or cheated • Pressing desire to talk with people who "really make sense." • Preoccupation with returning home

  7. Choices that will enhance your experience abroad… • First, fight the urge to retreat and join the group activities and outings. Mixing, meeting new people and forcing yourself to become part of the community will help you. • Initiate conversations with your student or their family members. Don’t always wait for them to ask you questions. Offer to help out in the house! • It’s only a week and a few days….and this is a rare and valuable opportunity you’ve been given….so, take advantage of it!
