  1. An Introduction to Polygons Miss Silva’s 4th Grade Class

  2. What is a Polygon?? • When people hear the word geometry, they tend to think about shapes. These shapes surround their lives each and every day. • Many of these shapes, or polygons, can be described as flat closed figures with 3 or more sides. • Polygons are classified and described by the number of sides, the kind of angles, and whether any of the sides are the same length (or congruent). • Many Polygons have special names

  3. Triangles • A triangle is a 3 sided polygon. • There are three types of triangles:

  4. Triangles Equilateral Triangle:All sides are equal. Isosceles Triangle: Two sides are equal in length. Scalene Triangle: No two sides are equal in length. *Can someone come up to the board and draw one type of triangle?

  5. Quadrilaterals • A quadrilateral is a 4 sided polygon. • It has 4 angles. • The most common types of quadrilaterals are • Rectangle • Parallelogram • Square • Trapezoid • Rhombus

  6. Quadrilaterals: Rectangle A Rectangle has opposite sides that are parallel and equal, or congruent. All of its angles are equal.

  7. Quadrilaterals: Parallelogram • A parallelogram has pairs of opposite sides that are parallel and equal in length.

  8. Quadrilaterals: Square • A square has all of its sides equal • All of its angles are equal • The angles are right angles (90 degrees)

  9. Quadrilaterals: Rhombus • A rhombus is a shape that has all four sides equal in length. A rhombus is sometimes called a “diamond.”

  10. Pentagon • A pentagon is a 5 sided polygon

  11. Hexagon • A hexagon is a 6 sided polygon A hexagon is the shape of a stop sign.

  12. Octagon • An octagon is an 8 sided polygon
