  2. Common Core (page 4R)*We will use 4L for our Do Now tomorrow Answer the following questions in complete sentences. • What is Common core? A new set of standards that will focus on the main skills to make students college-ready. The Common Core standards will be national. • How will it change how/what we learn? Students will have to write out their answers (no more multiple choice). Students must write and speak in complete sentences and explain their answers with EVIDENCE!!!! --Academic language Students use proper English.

  3. Common Core (page 4R)*We will use 4L for our Do Now tomorrow Answer the following questions in complete sentences. • What is Common core? Common core looks at the big idea of skills. The goal is to make students college-ready by the time they leave high school. Common core is a set of new standards that is nation-wide. • How will it change how/what we learn? Students will need to go in-depth with their answers and explain their reasoning. Instead of multiple choice, students will need to write out full sentence answers using academic language (smart English). Students will need to use EVIDENCE to back up their points.

Collaborative Learning Groups (CLG) (page 5L-R) –summarize the notes in an outline format.-- • What are Collaborative Learning Groups? • Students work in groups to help one another understand the key concept, accomplish a common goal, and divide the work evenly among them. • Students MUST work together in order for CLG to work. • Students must stay on task and take their role seriously. • Students will receive a grade as a group, so it’s important that everyone keeps their group mates focused.

CLG Roles • There will be four roles per group and these roles will rotate around so that everyone has the opportunity to try each role. • Each role will have specific responsibilities and duties. • Role #1– Reader: This person is in charge of reading everything that the group must read. The rest of the group still needs to follow along, but it is the reader who will do the actual reading aloud. • Role #2—Recorder: This person is in charge of writing. The group will work together to complete the various questions, but it is the recorder who is responsible for writing out the answers. This person will also make sure everyone’s name is on the paper and that the paper is set up correctly. The recorder is the only person allowed to write during a CLG activity.

  6. Continued.. E. Role #3—Gatekeeper: This person is in charge of keeping the group on task. If someone is not doing what they are supposed to do, then it is the gatekeeper who needs to remind them of their role and responsibilities. The gatekeeper will make sure that the group has all of their materials and will keep track of time to make sure that the group finishes on time. F. Role #4—Vocab Wizard—This person is in charge of identifying any unfamiliar words and figuring out what they mean. This person will teach the rest of the group the meanings of any unfamiliar words so that the group can be successful in their task. **Please note that if there is a group of 3, then the third person will be assigned gatekeeper and vocab wizard.

  14. First-Person Narrator is a part of the story (character). Often uses I or we. Example Iwent home. Tim came over. I couldn't play.

  15. Second-Person Usually for instructions Uses “You”; from “your” perspective. Examples First, gather your materials. Add 1 cup sugar to flour.

  16. Third-Person • Narrator usually isn’t involved. • Tells other's stories. • Lots of “He,” “She,” & character names. Three Types of Third-Person Narration Does the narrator tell… Thoughts and Feelings of Characters?

  17. Third-Person Objective Narrator does not reveal any character’s thoughts or feelings. Only character’s dialogue and actions are narrated. Example Tim slammed the door. He walked upstairs & read a note from Shay. He kicked her trash can & started crying.

  18. Third-Person Limited Narrator is limited to one character. Tells thoughts & feelings ofonecharacter Example Tim was mad at Shay. He blamed her. Shay just left without saying anything. She left a note and then left him.

  19. Third-Person Omniscient Narrator is allknowing. Narrator tells thoughts and feelings of more than one character. Omni = All Scient = Knowing Example Tim was mad at Shay. He blamed her. Shay knew Tim would be mad, but she wanted to live her life.

You still need to help the vocab wizard with the vocab chart and the rest of the group with the tasks. • Recorder—Your job is to write out the group’s answers on a separate sheet of paper, put everyone’s names on the paper, and contribute to the group. You must answer the questions in complete sentences and cite textual evidence for the questions in the boxes. • Vocab Wizard—Your job is to copy the vocab chart and fill it in on a separate sheet of paper. You still need to help the rest of the group with the tasks. • Gatekeeper—Your job is to keep your group on task and keep track of the time. You still need to help the vocab wizard with the vocab chart and the rest of the group with the tasks.

  29. Vocab Chart-The vocab wizard will draw this chart and fill it in on the back of the group’s paper or on a separate sheet of paper.
