  1. Content • Swiss Climate Foundation? • aim • how does it work? • projects • The Swiss CO2-levy on fossil combustibles • Becoming a partner-company

  2. Aim of the foundation The Swiss Climate Foundation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission (GHG) and improve energy-efficiency in Switzerland. It promotes small and medium enterprises (SME) developing products or implementing climate-friendly measures. The foundation is a non-profit organisation under federal surveillance (Bundesaufsicht).

  3. How does it work? • Partner-companies donate their net-rebate out of the CO2-levy = financing of the Swiss Climate Foundation • The foundation supports • climate friendly projects • of Small and Middle Enterprises in Switzerland • effectively and without bureaucracy • The foundation provides regular reports and communication to public and partner-companies Promote SME – protect the climate

  4. Organisation of the foundation • Foundation board: strategic decision body • Advising board: think-tank and assessment of applications (each partner company can delegate one member) • Communication board: support on communication issues Foundation board Advisory board sponsoring proposals Director Communication board 5

  5. 41 projects already subsidized with a total of about 2.6 Mio. CHF • Cheese-factory – Wood-based furnace for process heat generation (250'000.-) • Farming - Installation of thermal screens in a greenhouse. Usage of sprinkler-water for cooling of pumps and compressors (60’000.-) • Oat-mill – Process steam generation from biomass (190’000.-) • Sport-facility: Replacement of complete lighting system (12'000.-) • Machine industry: Installation of a heat pump and a heat-recovery system (100'000.-)

  6. What measures get supported? • direct CO2-reduction and energy-efficiency measures • development and marketing of innovative and climate-friendly products and solutions • voluntary commitment on CO2-reduction and energy-efficiency improvement within the SME-model of the Energy Agency of the Economy Small and Middle Enterprises in Switzerland are entitled

  7. Content • Swiss Climate Foundation? • The Swiss CO2-levy on fossil combustibles • a net positive for the service industry • Becoming a partner-company

  8. The CO2-Levy in Switzerland? Levy Redistribution 35% 35% 30% FuelGas CO2-Levy private persons via health insurance premium Enterprises per 100'000.- salary-volume: 2008-10: 131.50Sfr 2011/12: ~74.-Sfr/y bound for government building program max. 200 Mio/year Levy 36 CHF/t CO2

  9. Rebate distribution • Original plan • Earlier re-distribution decided by government as conjuncture measure (Bern, 15.09.2009) • Consequences for the Swiss Climate Foundation: The founding arrives earlier. Engagement remains until 2014. 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014

  10. Content • Swiss Climate Foundation? • The Swiss CO2-levy on fossil combustibles • Becoming a partner-company

  11. Image-enhancing • Position yourself as an environmentally friendly and progressive company • From the economy for the economy • Major service companies support small and medium sized enterprises in their effort to protect climate and save energy

  12. Cost-neutral for partner-companies Example for 1000 employees • assumption: average salary = 100'000 CHF • gross-rebate (2008-2012) = ~260'000 CHF • net–rebate (2008-2012) = ~ 200'000 CHF • net-rebate = gross-rebate minus CO2-levy paid • net typically equals 50%-90% of gross, depending on fossil-fuel-intensity of the company The net-rebate is a free cash entry for the company due to the only fact, that it is labour intensive and consumes little energy. This is mainly true for the service industry.

  13. Together efficient • Create a big impact together • Direct the founding to the projects rather than admin-costs • Bundle the forces rather than dispersing the actions …and you?
