  2. In India there are different religions, each religion is diversified into religious beliefs and practices. There are nine major recognized religions in India like Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Baha Faith. Madras was the name of Tamil Nadu after Independence, later it changes to Tamil Nadu. The history of Tamil Nadu says that it was the land raised by different kingdoms and several different dynasties religious and belief. Nearly 38,000 temples are in the state of Tamil Nadu, the state is also called as “Land of Temples”, many temples are at least 800 to 5000 year’s old. Let’s take a virtual tour of 10 amazing temples of Tamil Nadu.

  3. Sri Ranganatha Swami Temple, Tiruchirapalli It is considered the first, foremost and most important of the 108 main Vishnu temples. This temple is also known as ThiruvarangaTirupati. The temple is very large in size; the area is covered by 156 acres. There are 21 magnificent towers providing unique sight to visitors. It is one of the most illustrious Vaishnava temples in South India which is rich in legend and history. Temple is constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture. The main entrance of the temple is known as Rajagopuram. The height of the temple is 237 feet. South India celebrates Margazhi season in the month of December- January which attracts 1 Million visitors in this temple.

  4. Sri Ranganatha Swami Temple is listed as the largest functioning temple in the world. It has 7 prakarams with massive walls, 21 colorful sculpted gopurams, 50 sub-shrines, 9 scared polls.   5. 2. Brihadeswarar temple, Thanjavur Brihadeswar is situated in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu tourism. The temple was built by Cholas. Inside the temple, there is a temple tower famous as Vimana among the devotees and tourists. The Brihadeswara temple dedicated to lord Shiva was built by king RajaRajaChola. During ancient time temple was called PeriyaKoil and later named as Brihadeswarar temple. Brihadeswarar temple is widely knowns as ‘Big Temple’. Thanjavurlinga is 12.5 feet tall. A stone called Chandrakanta stone is installed under the linga. It has a speciality to cool during summer and comforting warmth during winter.

  6. 3. Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple is known as ‘Athens of East’. Temple is located in the southern bank of the Vagai river. As Taj Mahal is to North India Meenakshi Amman Temple is to South India. You must visit this temple if you are visiting the south. It is believed that Lord Shiva assumed the form of Sundareswarar and married Parvati at the site where the temple is located. Temple is spread over 14 acres. The temple has 4 main gopurams that look identical to each other. In total, the temple has 14 gopurams. During the ‘Tirukalyanam Festival,’ which takes place over a period of 10 days, the temple attracts a million devotees. Approx 25,000 devotees visit every day, the temple is well maintained and was named as ‘Best Swachh Iconic Place’. Since Meenakshi is the main goddess of the temple, the temple signifies the importance of woman in Tamil Hindu family.

  7. 4. Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswarar temple is another famous temple in Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu. The shrine of Lord Jambukeswarar has an underground water stream, and one can see water coming out of that stream. Every Friday from July to August is celebrated as special occasion. Temple is 1000 years old. Mother Ambica is praised as Akhilandeswar- Ruler and Protector of the world.

  8. 5. Kumari Amman Temple, Kanyakumari Kumari Amman Temple is located in Kanyakumari. This temple is the home of Devi Kanyakumari, referred as a virgin goddess. The virgin goddess is known with the names of Devi Kumari, Kumari Amman, and Kanya Devi. The beautiful temple is located on sea of Kanyakumari meeting with the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Temple has been mentioned in Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple was built around 2000-3000 years ago. The blue stone idol of Devi Kanya is believed to have installed by sage Parashurama. The story behind Kanyakumari Temple is the demon Banasura had captured all devas and kept them in his cruel captivity. He could be killed only by a virgin girl. Hence, upon devas prayers and plead, Goddess Parasakthi took the form of Kumari, the virgin girl so as to kill the demon.

  9. 6. KanchiKailasanthar Temple, Kanchipuram KanchiKailasanthar is the oldest temple in Kanchipuram. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built around 685-705 AD by Rajasimha ruler of the Pallava Dynasty. Kanchipuram remains an important pilgrimage center, in earlier years it was Jain. Buddhist center of learning and the great Hindu philosopher Ramanuja was educated there. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Kailasanthar temple. Kailasanthar temple means ‘Lord of Cosmic Mountain’.

  10. 7. Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram The temple was named Ramanathaswamy temple because Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here on his victorious return from Sri Lanka. According to legend, after killing Ravana Lord Rama returned with his goddess Sita to India first stepping on the shores of Rameswaram. It is believed that a visit to this temple washes away one’s sins and brings moksha. Ramanathswamy Temple has 22 wells in its complex. Being the main attraction of this temple. The wells are also recognized with their distinct properties. All of these wells have water of different taste, temperature, and is considered to cure all diseases. It is said that these wells were made by Lord Rama himself when he fired arrows in the sand.

  11. 8. Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Chennai Kapaleeshwarar temple was built in the 7th century by the Pallavas. Kapaleeshwar Temple is a temple of Lord Shiva located in Mylapore, Chennai. This original temple was demolished by the Portuguese and the present temple was built in the 16th century by the Vijayanagar Kings. The devotee’s crowd is usually huge on Full Moon and New Moon days.

The Pallavas have built five Rathas known as Dharamrajaratha, Bheema, Arjuna, SahadevaNakula, and Draupadi. Each Ratha is believed to have been dedicated to Pandava brothers from the times of Mahabharata. The main highlight of this temple is Five Rathas or Chariots with each Ratha carved in different shape and size, attractive sculptures of animals, humans, and gods.

  13. 10 .Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple, Vellore Sri Lakshmi Narayani temples are spread over 100 acres. Mahalakshmi Golden Temple Sripuram is dedicated to the Goddess Lakshmi. The very presence of Guru, Sri SakthiAmma, who is worshiped by the devotees as their goddess also draws a huge number of pilgrims to this temple. It is estimated that on some occasions, the number of devotees at the temples even reaches to 1 lakh. Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple has many features like its SahasraDeepam(1008 lamps), 18 feet bronze structure with 9 or 12 gold layers, the path to the temple has been created in the shape of a star. The overall construction of this temple is said to be more than 300 crores.
