  2. Texas State Data Center A demographic data, information, and consulting resource center for Texas • Facilitate access to demographic information and analysis • Provide some connection and serve the common and unique demographic related interests and needs of affiliates and other constituents

U.S. Census Bureau Partnership The National State Data Center Program •  Data Centers are a Federal-State cooperative program • State Data Center (SDC) Program – created in 1978 • Business and Industry Data Center (BIDC) Program - added in 1988 • The lead organization in each state is appointed by the Governor • Includes all 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the island areas

  7. What do Data Centers do? Data Center Responsibilities: Provide assistance to data users in locating, using, and understanding Census Bureau Data •   Respond Promptly to Data User requests •   Maintain an archive of Census reference materials •  Maintain appropriate technology to access and utilize data provided by the Census Bureau and Texas SDC Lead •  Provide copies of data to clients on a cost reimbursable basis •  Provide Annual Report of Data Center Activities for U. S. Census Bureau

  8. BIDC Program: The purpose of the BIDC network is to provide convenient access to statistical data and other sources of usable information by: • Providing basic economic and demographic information to data users • Completing complex analysis as needed • Performing regional economic analysis

SDC/BIDC Lead Agency: The Texas Lead SDC/BIDC Agency will: • Disseminate Texas Census Data • Archive data from previous Census data releases • Coordinate the Texas SDC/BIDC networks • Produce and distribute population estimates and projections • Provide technical assistance, in-depth analysis, and consultation for data

Identifying the Needs of Texas Data Users Data users have diverse needs - they want: • Data they can manipulate themselves •  Data in tables/maps/charts that are simple to access for their area of interest •  Data analyses: What does this data mean? •  They want to be able to help themselves (find it online in the format that they want)

  14. Updating our resources: Provide online data for Texas data users: • No duplication of Census Bureau data delivery •  Provide static profiles •  User defined data •  More GIS options and support •  Offer most current data in a timely manner • Flexibility for various uses

Challenges to Current and Future Data Use: To serve data users we need to address data use: • Fewer printed sources and greater reliance on internet data distribution • Appropriate use of data • More data available more frequently – less documentation and analysis • Comparability of data over time • Assistance in accessing and using American Community Survey Data

Population Estimates and Projections • Annual estimates of the total populations of counties and places in the state and estimates of county populations by age, sex, and race/ethnicity • Biennial projections of the population of the state and all counties in the state by age, sex and race/ethnicity
