  1. Millennials Concerned but not Fanatical About Environment

  2. Introduction • A representative sample of American adults born between 1980 and 1991 was surveyed. • National sample size was 1,200 people. • A demographically balanced online panel was used for the interviewing. • Respondents were not informed the research was being conducted on behalf of LifeWay Research. • Surveys were conducted during August 2009. • At a 95% confidence level and a 50% response distribution, the potential sampling error on this national sample is ±2.8 percentage points.

  3. Religious Definitions • “Christ as Savior” are those whose belief about life after death is that they will go to heaven because they have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior. • “Other than Christ” are those whose belief about life after death is something other than going to heaven because they have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior.

  4. Attitudes about the Environment For all the attention environmental issues get related to this generation, some of the findings were surprising. A majority feels many people in their generation go overboard on this issue, and just 16% said that a candidate’s environmental conscience has a major impact on their voting. Only 23% are strongly concerned with having a job that has a positive impact on the environment. To some extent, strong environmentalism is more a stereotype than a reality with Millennials.

  5. Is the Environment My Responsibility? The vast majority of Millennials agreed that it’s up to their generation to clean up the environment, but only 41% agreed strongly with this. Q7a. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: It is up to my generation to clean up the environment.

  6. Is the Environment My Responsibility? Asians, Hispanics, and people in the West had particularly strong convictions that it’s up to their generation to clean up the environment. Q7a. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: It is up to my generation to clean up the environment.

  7. Did Previous Generations Harm the Environment? Most Millennials felt previous generations did great harm to the environment, but just 25% agreed strongly with this. Q7f. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: Previous generations did great harm to the environment.

  8. Do Millennials Go Overboard on the Environment? Millennials were split on this issue, although a slim majority felt that many people in their generation go overboard when it comes to the environment. Attitudes on this were not very strong in either direction. Q9c. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: Many people in my generation go overboard on environmental issues.

  9. Do Millennials Go Overboard on the Environment? Women people in the Northeast were somewhat less likely to agree with this statement. Those who trust Christ as Savoir, particularly, felt their generation goes overboard on the environment. Q9c. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: Many people in my generation go overboard on environmental issues.

  10. Does the Environment Affect Voting? Most Millennials said a candidate’s environmental conscience impacts their voting, but very few felt this way strongly. This appears to be part of their political decisions, but not a major part. Q9d. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: One of the key factors when I choose a political candidate is that he or she has a strong environmental conscience.

  11. Does the Environment Affect Voting? Whites were less likely than other ethnic groups to agree with this statement. Those who trust Christ as Savior were also less likely to do so, although they were fairly split on this. Q9d. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: One of the key factors when I choose a political candidate is that he or she has a strong environmental conscience.

  12. The Environment and Employment Although many felt their generation goes overboard on the environment, that didn’t stop three out of four from saying they would like to use their skills in a job that benefits the environment. Q9e. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: I would like to use my skills in a job that benefits the environment.

  13. The Environment and Employment Minorities and those involved in a non-Christian religion were the most likely to want to have a job that benefits the environment. Although those who trust Christ as Savior were less environmentally focused, they were no less likely to agree with this statement. Q9e. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: I would like to use my skills in a job that benefits the environment.

  14. Spiritual Attitudes and Practices About two-thirds called themselves Christian, with 14% atheist or agnostic, and 14% having no religious preference. Only 26% trust Jesus Christ as Savior.

  15. Religious Preference Only 65% of Millennials were willing to call themselves Christian in even the broadest sense. Q24. What is your religious preference?

  16. Making a Commitment to Christ One-third of all Millennials agreed strongly that they have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ; another 24% agreed somewhat with this. Q35h. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: You have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in your life today.

  17. Making a Commitment to Christ Sixteen percent of those who do not trust Christ as Savior still strongly claimed a personal commitment to Christ, as did 10% of those who affiliated with a non-Christian religion (demonstrating how much syncretism there is). Q35h. How much would you agree or disagree with each statement: You have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in your life today.

  18. Beliefs about Life after Death The most common belief about life after death is that no one really knows. Q36. There are many beliefs about life after death. Which of the following statements is closest to your own beliefs?
