Welcome to MMFA! • Every student has an opportunity to eat in the classroom • No student pays to eat • Program supported by State MMFA funds and federal School Breakfast money
MMFA Classroom Breakfast Program • History and Requirements. • Began in Fall 1998 • At least 40% of enrollment approved free or reduced meal benefits in order to apply • Breakfast must be served and eaten in the classroom
MMFA Classroom Breakfast Program • What are the benefits? • Quieter morning • Decreased behavior problems • Increased attention span • Decreased tardiness • Improved attendance • Improved Maryland test scores
Fact • Poor nutrition hampers academic achievement • “Even malnutrition that is too slight for clinical signs affect our students intelligence and academic performance”
FACT • Proper nutrition enhances academic performance
Teachers Play a Vital Role • Help students understand the program • Communicate with School Food & Nutrition staff about the program • Keep track of who receives a reimbursable breakfast
What are we Required to Offer? • USDA requires us to offer four “components” for breakfast, including: • Two servings of bread or two servings of protein or one serving of each (entrée/two components) • milk, (one component) • fruit, vegetable, or juice, (one component)
How many components must a student take to receive a check mark? The entrée (2 components) and At least one other item (1 component)
Recording which Students take a Reimbursable Breakfast • An up-to-date roster is delivered to the classroom each morning • A classroom adult must check off the name of each student who takes a reimbursable breakfast • Let’s review the Student Roster together

A Common Non-compliance Concern • Students checking off breakfasts on the roster. Only ADULTS may mark the classroom roster form.

Why is all this Counting Necessary? • State & federal reimbursement is tied to accurate reporting by category (free, reduced-price, paid) • Paid = $1.06 • Reduced = $1.76 • Free = $1.76 • Without State & federal funds, MMFA could not continue
Keys to Success • Help students learn what makes up a reimbursable breakfast and remind them frequently • Make sure your classroom’s roster is accurate (check marks where there should be check marks) • Ask your Food and Nutrition Services Manager for support

Putting it all in Perspective • Rules regarding reimbursable breakfasts - ensure that students get a balanced, nutritious meal which helps prepare them to learn • Rules requiring accurate counts: • Assure funding is received for all breakfast served • Protect the program from fraud
