  1. 3-1 Lesson 1-2 Example 4 Solve. On Venus an object weighs 91% as much as it weighs on Earth. How much would a person who weighs 140 pounds on Earth weigh on Venus? Understand Read the problem. Write what you know. On Venus, something weighs 91% of what it does on Earth.

  2. 3-1 Lesson 1-2 Example 4 Plan Pick a strategy. One strategy is to solve a simpler problem. Divide 91% into percents that are easier to compute. 91% = 90% + 1%

  3. 3-1 Lesson 1-2 Example 4 Solve 90%: What is 10% of 140 pounds? 14 pounds Multiply 14 pounds by 9 because 90 = 10 ● 9. So, 90% of 140 is 126 pounds. 1%:1% of 140 is 1.4. 91% Add the smaller percents to find 91% of 140 pounds. 90% + 1% = 126 pounds + 1.4 pounds = 127.4 pounds

  4. 3-1 Lesson 1-2 Example 4 Check You can check your answer using estimation. 91% is close to 90% or 9 of 140 is 126. So, the answer is reasonable.
