Thoughts about Equipment Ken Goodwin Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Quilt Fiber Workshop Aug 21-23, 2004
This talk…. • Anything I can tell you about any particular piece of gear is probably outdated by the time you get home. • So this will be some general observations….
Remember • Optical Networking is very similar to analog circuits. • It is not simple as ones and zeroes • Amplification(loss), dispersion • Life is getting easier with VOAs, tunable filters, better simulators, etc. • But it is not plug-n-play.
Lot’s of work before the PO • What do you want – OADM sites, speeds, channels, distances • Ask, demand, insist on getting complete fiber characteristics…..distance, loss, dispersion, etc • Get these to your vendor for final analysis. • Especially important if you are nearing the edge of “the zone.”
Before the PO (cont.) • DWDM vendors use configurators/simulators to generate a BOM. • Garbage in->Garbage out, Good information in-> Light out • Vendors starting to release these tools to customers.
Equipment • Part number soup • Don’t assume that normal management interfaces exist. • Equipment is from the Telco arena… TL1 interface is much more developed than SNMP. • Use the GUI. Command line is minimal. • Installation is extra. Might be worth the cost.
Due Diligence • Get in writing • Current design and future growth. • What is included or more importantly what is NOT. (cables, power lugs, etc.) • Configuration (cabling and params) • Lab trial (if necessary) or preproduction • Disaster recovery as well as config and operation
Install • REMEMBER! Telco DC power is positive ground. • If installing into a Telco PoP, buy the tech lunch, after-work beer, sports cars, etc. -- You will need him to like you…… a lot. • QA the install yourself in addition to any other checks.
Install/Post-install • High speed transponders, pre-amps, etc don’t grow on trees….. Getting replacement parts may be a problem. • Monitor system for degradation. This can be the canary…..
