  2. What is this draft about? • The NSIS working group has selected two applications: • QoS signaling • NAT/Firewall signaling • Path-coupled signaling is useful for other application areas as well. • Goal: Dynamically configure and coordinate accounting entities rather than hardwiring them • This draft discusses the usage of NSIS in two scenarios: • Charging • Monitoring

  3. AccountingFramework +-----------------+ | Collector | | +-------------+ | | | Acc. Record | | | +-------------+ | +-----------------+ ^ ^ ^ ^ **** * * **** **** * * **** **** * * **** **** * * **** +-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+ | +-----+| | +-----+| | +-----+| | +-----+| ===>| AE | Acc.||===>| AE | Acc.||===>| AE | Acc.||===>| AE | Acc.||===> | | Data|| | | Data|| | | Data|| | | Data|| | +-----+| | +-----+| | +-----+| | +-----+| +-----------+ | | +-----------+ +-----------+ ^ ^ | | ^ * * | | * +----+ +----+ | | +-----+ --->| MP | | MP |--->| MP |------>| MP |-----------------------> +----+ +----+ +-----------+ +-----+ +--+ |AE| = Accounting === = Acc.   4. Scenario 1: Charging +------------------------------------------+ Data Receiver | Router 1 Router 2 Data Sender | +-----------+ | +----+ +----+ +-----------+ | |Application|<-----| |<-----| |<-----|Application| | | +--+ | | |+--+| |+--+| | +--+ | | | |AE| | | ||AE||<====>||AE||<====>| |AE| | | | +--+ | | |+--+| |+--+| | +--+ | | +-----------+ | +----+ +----+ +-----------+ | | Accounting Domain | +------------------------------------------+ +--+ |AE| = Accounting === = Signaling --- = Data Flow +--+ Entity Messages • NSIS is used in this scenario to dynamically configure AEs • start/stop accounting on a particular flow at different entities • correlate these records

  5. Scenario 2: Monitoring +-----------------------------------------------------------+ | | | Administrative Domain A | | | | Ingress Node A probe 1 probe 2 Egress Node B | | +-----------+ +----+ +----+ +-----------+ | | | |=====>| |=====>| |=====>| | | | | | | | | | | | | ---->| AE |----->| AE |----->| AE |----->| AE |----> | | | | | | | | | | | +-----------+ +----+ +----+ +-----------+ | | | +-----------------------------------------------------------+ +--+ |AE| = Accounting === = Signaling --- = Data Flow +--+ Entity Messages • Monitoring is of interest for many applications as identified by IPFIX • For example: • Accounting data is used for monitoring whether the QoS negotiated in the SLA corresponds to the QoS delivered (e.g., delay) • Internet Research, measurement, Intrusion detection

  6. Next Steps • Does the working group think that this is interesting? • How to proceed with new NSLPs such as this one? • Comments are appreciated?
