  1. Surat An-Nas “Mankind”

  2. قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ (1) • 1. Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind, مَلِكِ النَّاسِ (2) • 2. "The King of mankind, إِلَهِ النَّاسِ (3) • 3. "The Ilah (God) of mankind, مِن شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ (4) • 4. "From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one's heart after one remembers Allah) , الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ (5) • 5. "Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَ النَّاسِ (6) • 6. "Of jinns and men."

  3. TafsirSurat An-Nas: • (:(قل أعوذ برب الناس ملك الناس إله الناس Allah )(is guiding His Prophet )( and hisnation to seek the refuge with Him with believing in His attributes meanings (Lord, The King, God) to get the protection from the hidden evil whispers. The more humble we will be the more protection we will have which will make our enemies withdraw.

  4. (من شر الوسواس الخناس) Allah described these evil whispers: they will withdraw once we hold fast to Allah. Al-Mu`tamir bin Sulayman reported that his father said, "It has been mentioned to me that Shaytan is Al-Waswas. He blows into the heart of the Son of Adam when he is sad and when he is happy. But when he (man) remembers Allah, Shaytan withdraws.”

  5. (The whisperer) "He is Shaytan. He whispers and then when he is disobeyed, he withdraws. Narrated IbnAbbas (),the Messenger of Allah () said: “The devil who is squatting (perched) upon the heart of the Son of Adam. So when he(man) becomes absentminded and heedless he whispers. Then, when he (man) remembers Allah he withdraws.'‘. (Mishkat Al-Masabeeh, Al-AlbaniSahih 2221).

  6. :(من الجنة والناس) this explanatory of Allah's statement, The evil whispers are coming from jinn and human,(from Jinn to human and Jinn) and( from human to human and Jinn), as Allah said: وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا (6) (الجن) 6. And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the masculine among the jinns, but they (jinns) increased them (mankind) in sin and disbelief.(Al-Jinn 72) وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نِبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيَاطِينَ الإِنسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ زُخْرُفَ الْقَوْلِ غُرُورًا (112 الأنعام) 112. And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies - Shayatin (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). (Al-An’am 6)

  7. So Allah clarifies for us who are our enemies. Some human whisperers may come in many forms: Evil friends, bad advisors, king's consultants, temptation sellers (obscene magazine, talks, film), stirrers(gossipers) and so on. Remember ! That this battle will never end except after death. Seek the refuge of Allah continuously the Lord, The King and God who told us in (Surat Al-Hijr: 39,40) on the tongue of Iblis: قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِي لأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الأَرْضِ وَلأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ (39)، إِلاَّ عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ (40) (الحجر) • 39. [Iblis(Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. • 40. "Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them.” )Al-Hijr 15) Although He gave the permission to Satan to fight the Son of Adam, but He grasp his forelock.

  8. The Names of Surat An-Nas: 1) Surat An-Nas: Because it starts witha verse contains the word( Aln-Nas) and it is been repeated for five times. 2)Surat (قل أعوذ برب الناس): It was narrated that Uqbah bin Amir said: “The Messenger of Allah  said: Do you not see verses that have been revealed tonight, the like of which has never been seen? (They are:) Say: I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of the daybreak, and: Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind”. (Muslim 814) 3) Surat Al-Mu'awwadhatayn (with Surat Al-Falaq). It was narrated that Uqbah Bin Amir said: “The Messenger of Allah  said to me: There have been revealed to me verses the like of which has never been seen (they are) : Al-Mu’awwidhatain”. (Muslim 815)

  9. Diligence Names of this Sura: 1) Al-Muqqashqeshatain (with Al-Falaq): [Al-Ssakawi & Al-soyote]. 2) Al-MushaqSheqatain (with Al-Falaq): [Al-Qurtubi & Al-Zamakhshari]. Because they clear the heart from Hypocrisy.

  10. The virtues of this Sura: 1) Reciting during sickness Narrated Aishah: Whenever Allah’s Messenger  became sick, he would recite Mu’awwidhat (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (These two surah) and rub his hands over his body, hoping for its blessings.(Al-Bukhari 5016)

  11. 2) Before sleeping: Narrated Aishah: Whenever the Prophet  went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. (Al-Bukhari 5017) 3) The like of which has never been seen. It was narrated that Uqbah bin Amir said: “The Messenger of Allah  said: Do you not see verses that have been revealed tonight, the like of which has never been seen? (They are:) Say: I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of the daybreak, and: Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind”. (Muslim 814)

  12. * Stage of revealation: It's Makkeyyah (Before Hijrah) and its revealed after Al-Falaq and Al-Iklas. • The cause of revealation: Narrated Aisha : A man called Labid bin Al-A’sam from the tribe of BaniZuraiq worked magic on Allah’s Messenger  till Allah’s Messenger  started imagining that he had done a thing that he had not really done. One day or one night he was with us, he invoked Allah and invoked for a long period, and then said, “O Aisha! Do you know that Allah has instructed me concerning the matter I have asked Him about?

  13. Two men came to me and one of them sat near my head and the other near my feet. One of them said to his companion, What is the desease of this man?” The other replied, “He is under the effect of magic.” The first one asked, Who has worked the magic on him?’ The other replied, Labid bin Al-A’sam.’ The first one asked, What material did he use?” The other replied, “A comb and the hairs stuck to it and the skin of pollen of a male date palm.” The first one asked, “Where is that?” The other replied, “(That is) in the well of Dharwan”. So Allah’s Messenger  along with some of his companions went there and came back saying, “O’Aishah, the colour of its water is like the infusion of Hinna leaves. The tops of the date-palm trees near it are like the heads of the devils.” I asked. “O Allah’s Messenger? Why did you not show it?” He said, “Since Allah cured me, I disliked to let evil spread among the people.” Then he ordered that the well be filled up with earth. (Al-Bukhari 5763)

  14. The theme of this Sura: • Holding fast to Allah from the hidden evil that He has created (seeking the refuge from the hidden evil which enters from a place where the person likes (his desires, lusts ). • The relation between Surat An-Nas and it's theme: • This Sura is talking about three attributes of Allah: • Lord: Lordship • The King: Mighty, Sovereignty. • Ilah (God): Divinity.

  15. These are three attributes from the attributes of the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic. They are lordship, sovereignty and divinity. Thus, He is the Lord of everything, the King of everything and the God of everything. All things are created by Him, owned by Him, and subservient to Him. Therefore, He commands whoever is seeking protection to seek refuge with the One Who has these attributes from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws. This (the whisperer) is the devil that is assigned to man. For verily, there is not any of the Children of Adam except that he has a companion that beautifies wicked deeds for him. This devil will go to any lengths to confuse and confound him. The only person who is safe is He Whom Allah protects. (IbnKatheer)

  16. The relation between beginning of Surat An-Nas and it's end: Allah said in Surat An-Nisa’: وَخُلِقَ الإِنسَانُ ضَعِيفًا (28)(النساء) 28. and man was created weak. (An-Nisa' 4) Inspite of all what Allah has given the human, he is still weak, and he has many desires. He can not resist (fight) Jinn, human whispers and the self who adorn temptations, without seeking refuge with his Lord, the King and Ilah(God). Allah is so merciful because He taught us how to protect us from all of our enemies.

  17. The relation between the theme of Surat An-Nas and the theme of its previous Sura (Al-Falaq): • Allah ( )ordered us in Surat Al-Falaqto seek refuge from: 1. The evil of what He has created. 2. The evil of the night when it advances with its darkness. 3. The evil of blowers in knots (the witches). 4. The evil of the envier when he envies. • and He mentioned in Surat An-Nas: seeking the refuge from the evil of satan (jinn) and from human kind. → Seeking the refuge from the external and the internal evils. • That's why they are both called: Al-Mu'awwathatain

  18. The relation between the parts of Surat An-Nas and its theme: • Allah ( )ordered His prophet ( )to seek the refuge with Allah() from the evil of the whisperers which could mischief the Messenger's () works and his guidance to people. This is a a sign from Allah to His prophet () that He will protect him from the whisperers, so he can complete his call (Da’wa) to Allah. • It's also a lesson for all Muslims to seek the refuge like their prophet(). (the more we seek refuge the more safe we will be.)

  19. The reason of the repetition of the word (An-Nas): • The Lord of the people is honoring them by this repetition and guiding them to seek refuge with Allah, their Lord, The king and God. • Allah is talking to them.( the prophet is a human) • The relation between the beginnig of Surat An-Nas and Surat Al-Falaq: • In Surat Al-Falaq: Allah() has guided His prophet () and his nation to seek refuge with their Lord (one attribute) from four lesions: (the evil of all what He has created, darkness, blowers in knots (Sorcerers) and the envier). But

  20. In Surat An-Nas: Allah () has guided His prophet  and his nation to seek refuge with Allah (with three attributes: TheLord, TheKing, God) from one lesion: the evil whisperer). • Why? • In Surat Al-Falaq: the required matter of seeking the refuge is the safety of self and body ( external). • In Surat An-Nas: the required matter of seeking the refuge is the safety in one's faith. This is a warning: that the harm in one's faith even if it's minor is greater and more serious than the harm in one's body even if it is big. The more important thing you want, the more humble you should be.

  21. The relation between Surat An-Nas (the end of Al- Qur'an) and Surat Al-Fatiha (as the beginning of Al-Qur'an): 1) Allah has created us in this life to test us as in Surat Al-Mulk: الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفُورُ (2) (الملك) 2. Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving. (Al-Mulk 67)

  22. every one will enter every test with two voices inside him: One voice will call him to the truth and with this voice he has to ask the help from Allah to guide him to follow it (which is in Surat Al-Fatiha (وإياك نستعين). The other voice is pulling him to falsehood. With this voice every one has to seek the refuge with Allah (As in Surat An-Nas). So the life is between seeking help (Al-Fatiha) and seeking refuge (An-Nas). That means: The solution (to succeed in all the tests) is in this book (The Quran) which starts with Al-Fatiha and ends with An-Nas.

  23. 2) Al-Fatiha Starts with three most beautiful names (Lord, King, God) same are in (An-Nas): a) We have to learn their meanings, live under their shades and have them as a way of life. b) After these names in Al-Fatiha Allah guided us to ask Him Al-Hedaya (the guidance to the straight way) which will take you to paradise. • And in An-Nas: we are seeking the refuge from evil whispers which will save us from Hellfire. That is the great success as Allah said in Surat Al-Imran 185): • فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ (185) (آل عمران) 185. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful.(Ale-Imran 3)

  24. that means: Before asking our requests we have to introduce the beautiful Praise To Allah. • The more needs and requirements you want, the more humble we should be (by increasing the Praise to our Lord, The King and God.) 3) Both Suras are unique as reported in the following two Hadiths: The Messenger of Allah () said to Uqba bin Amer () "O Uqba bin Amer, Do you want me to teach you Suras which haven't been revealed like them neither in Torah nor in Al-Zabour nor in the Gospel nor in Al-Furqan" Don't let any night comes without reciting them: they are: (QulHuaa Allah Ahad, QulA'uthobeRabi Al-Falaq, QulA'uthobeRabbi An-Nas). (الألباني- السلسلة الصحيحة 6/859 صحيح)

  25. And in another Hadith: The Prophet Mohammad () said to Obay bin Ka'b () : (Allah has not revealed neither in Torah nor in Injil (Gospel) like Umm Al-Quran, the seven of Al-Mathani. It's been divided between Allah and between His worshipper, and my worshipper will get what he asked." صحيح الجامع 5560 So the Quran Starts with a Sura, that has not been revealed like it, and ended with two Suras, there haven't been revealed like them, to combine between the best starting and ending.

  26. 4) Allah has ordered people to start reciting the Quran with (أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم) as in Surat An-Nahl: فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ (98)(النحل) 98. So when you want to recite the Qur'an, seek refuge with Allah from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one). (16. An-Nahl) and end with Al-Falaq and An-Nas to seek the refuge with Allah at the beginning and at the end of reciting Quran, Allah is the only One who can protect us from the beginning to the end.

  27. Lessons from Surat An-Nas: 1) Necessity of asking Allah's refuge from the evil whispers of Al-Jinn and Humankind. It is confirmed in Sahih Muslim that he (the Prophet ) said, “There is not a single one of you except that his companion (a devil) has been assigned to him.) They (the Companions) said, ‘What about you, O Messenger of Allah?'' He replied. Yes However, Allah has helped me against him and he has accepted Islam. Thus, he only commands me to do good.”)( Muslim 2814)

  28. Narrated SafiyyabintHuyai: While Allah’s Messenger  was in I’tikaf, I called on him at night and having had a talk with him, I got up to depart. He got up also to accompany me to my dwelling place, which was then in the house of Usama bin Zaid. Two Ansari men passed by, and when they saw the Prophet  said (to them). “Don’t hurry! It is Safiyya, the daughter of Huyai (i.e., my wife).” They said, “Glorified be Allah! O Allah’s Messenger! (You are fat away from any suspicion?)” He said, “Satan circulates in a human being as blood circulates in it, and I was afraid that Satan might put an evil thought (or something in your hearts”. (Al-Bukhari 3281)

  29. 2) Affirmation of the three names of Allah: Lord ((الرب, The King (الملك) and God (الإله). 3) Allah is Merciful because he told us about our enemies to be aware of them.(battle) 4) Bad evil whispers might come from human and Satan (Jinn).

  30. The Lord (Ar-Rabb): • It's been mentioned more than 900 times. • The meaning of this name: [there is no proper equivalent for Rabb in English Language]. We use Lord as the nearest to Rabb.

  31. It means the One and the Only Lord for all the universe, its Creator, Owner, Organizer, Provider, Master, Planner, Sustainer, Cherisher, Giver of security. The One who disposes the affair of all things, the One who nurtures worshippers, The One who bestows His Grace on creatures, the One who sustains and protects all the exists and it has a meaning of: upbringing people (raising up) from deficiency to perfection. • It can be a descriptive to others by adding it to them, and it never comes alone except for Allah the Lord.(land lord)

  32. Ibn Al-Qayyem(رحمه الله)said:" His Lordship to the world includes: to dispose and manage it, every day He is engaged in some affair (such as giving honor or disgrace to some, life or death to some), Create, Provide Sustenance, Give and Prevent and handle matters as He wills." Also there is a special nurturing to righteous as IbnSa'dy said: "Towards His special worshippers by reforming their hearts, their Souls and their behaviors. That’s why most of prayers (invocations) came with this name (Lord) as all the Prophets () invoke their Lord with this name (Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, Josef, Zachariah, Suleiman, The wife of Imran, The Righteous worshippers, our Prophet() and so on.

  33. The impact of believing in this name (Lord): 1) Our Lord created us and never left us neglected but He taught us about his names and attributes and about what may benefit us in this life and in the Hereafter. 2) Worshipping Him alone and join non with Him, because the one who possess the keys of every thing, He alone deserves to be worshiped. 3) The name (Lord) includes all Allah's names, which means that the impact of all the names can be shown in the impact of this name. 4) Being pleased with Him as a Lord and pleased with all His command and prohibitions. The feeling of pleasure will be followed with tasting the sweetness of faith. Then the acts of worship will be easy and one will perform it with pleasure.

  34. 5) Loving Allah with all our hearts loving what he loves and hating what he hates. 6) Depend on the Lord in managing all the matters because He is the Only One who benefits and harms, to Him alone belongs the treasures of the heavens and the earth. 7) Seek the refuge with Allah the Lord by invoking Him with humility, asking Him all what we need, Never giving up hope of Allah's Mercy and despair from others. 8) As in the Hadith: Our Prophet  forbids us to call the master my Lord Narrated Abu Hurairah The Prophet  said: “You should not say, ‘Feed you lord (Rabbaka), help your lord in performing ablution, or give water to your lord’ but should say, ‘My master (e.g. feed your master instead of lord) (Saiyidi)’, or ‘My guardian (Maulai)’, and one should not say, ‘My slave (‘Abdi)’, or ‘My girl-slave (Amati)’, but should say, ‘My lad (Fatai)’, ‘My lass (Fatati)’, and ‘My boy (Ghulami)”. to single to Allah alone with worship.

  35. The King: • It was mentioned in the Quran 5 times. • It comes also in the Sunna as in the long Hadith: (The Prophet of Allah () used to start his prayer • When he got up to pray at night, he said: “Wajjahtuwajhialilladhifatarassamawatiwal-ardahanifanwa ma ana min al-Mushrikin, innasalatinwanusukewamahyayawamamatilillahirabbil-alamin, la sharikalahuwabidhalikaumirtuwaana min al-muslimin. Allahummaantal-maliku la ilahailla ant, anta rabbi, waanaabdukazalamtunafsiwa’taraftubidhanbifaghfirlidhunubijami’an, innahu la yaghfiradh-dhunubailla ant. Wahadinili-ahsanilakhlaqi la yahdili-ahsanihailla ant, wasrifannisayyi’aha, la yasrifuannisayyi’ahailla ant.

  36. (I have turned my face in submission to the One who originated the heavens and the earth, and I am not one of the idolators. Verily, my salat (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists). He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am one of the Muslims. O Allah, You are the sovereign, there is none worthy of worship but You. You are my Lord and I am Your slave. I have wronged myself and I admit my sin, so forgive me all my sins, for no one can forgive sins except You. Guide me to the best of conduct, for none can guide to that except You. Remove from me my evil deeds, for none can remove them except You. Here I am at Your service, all goodness is in Your hand and evil cannot be attributed to You. My existence is due to You and my return is to You. Blessed and exalted are You, I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You”. (Muslim 771)

  37. It was narrated that Abdullah bin Mas’ud said: “A Jewish scholar came to the Messenger of Allah  and said: “O Muhammad, or O Abul-Qasim- on the Day of Resurrection Allah will carry the heavens on one finger, the earths on one finger, the mountains and trees on one finger, the water and soil on one finger, and the rest of creation on one finger, then He will shake them and will say: “I am the sovereign, I am the Sovereign.” The Messenger of Allah  smiled, liking what the Jewish scholar said and confirming it. then he recited: They made not a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him. And on the Day of Resurrection the whole of the earth will be grasped by His Hand and the heavens will be rolled up in His Right Hand. Glorified is He, and Exalted is He above all that they associated as partners with Him!”. (Muslim 2786)

  38. The meaning of this name: • IbnJarir said: "The King who is no one above Him and every thing is below Him". • Ibn Al-Qayyem(رحمه الله) said: "Allah has the real dominion and this name involves all the perfect attributes, because its impossible to prove the real dominion to whom doesn't have life, Ability, Will, Power, Hearing, Seeing, Talking, Acting, Ordering, Forbidding, Rewarding with honor and so on.

  39. Allah is the Only Owner of the of the Day of Recompense and this life as Allah said in Surat Al-Fatiha(مالك يوم الدين): The Only owner and the Only Ruling Judge of the Day of Resurrection, because there might be people who claims that they Own palaces, gold, silver and lands, but they don't know that they have been lent to them, One day it might be taken from them or they might leave it. on the Day of Resurrection, the whole dominion belongs to Allah. As in Surat Al-Furqan: الْمُلْكُ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْحَقُّ لِلرَّحْمَنِ (26) الفرقان 26. The sovereignty on that Day will be the true (sovereignty), belonging to the Most Beneficent (Allah). (Al-Furqan 25) • All the kings in this world are not true kings and also their kingdoms are not true and if some one becomes king this is because Allah wills that.

  40. The impacts of the name (The King): • Because He is the only One who disposes the affairs in His dominion as He wills according to His Knowledge, Wisdom, Mercy and Justice, Praise be to Him for His Sovereignty, Creating and for all His attributes and acts. He is not such that any thing in the heavens or in the earth escapes Him and He is able to do every thing. He owns the treasures of the heavens and earth. He owns every thing, the most supreme: 1) All love, fear and hope must be to him alone. 2) Holding fast to Allah asking Him the help, seeking refuge as all of us are been owned to him. 3) No one deserves to be worshipped but Allah the true King. 4) Depend on Him in every minor or major matter.

  41. 5) Ask Allah the sustenance and feel satisfied with what He gives and prevents. There is not a thing but with Allah the stores. Hadith: Abu DharrJundubibnJunada reported from the Prophet(),, in what is related from what Allah ()said:”O My slaves, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were equal in evil like the heart of the most evil man among you, that would not detract anything from My dominion. O My slaves, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were to stand on a single plain and ask of Me and I were to give each one what he asked for, that would not cause any loss to Me greater than what is lost when a needle is dipped into the sea. O My slaves, it is only your actions that I am recording for you, then I will requite you for them. Whoever finds it to be good, let him praise Allah, and whoever finds it to be otherwise, let him blame no one but himself.” (Muslim 2577) 6) Show humbleness in spite of all what you have.

  42. 7) Trust His justice (That’s why there are verses have the name King with the name Al-Quddus (The Holy and the One Free from all defects To show that He is a King and Irresistible (Supreme)), Handle matters as He wills and His actions are free from injustice (He is a King with Free of inequity). 8) Believing in The decree (the Qadar), nothing happens or will happen without His permission. 9) Believing in His wisdom. He created His creatures not in vain.

  43. 10) Being patient when we see the injustice of some rulers in this life and believe that Allah- the real King- is the Irresistible (supreme) above His slaves including the King of this world, tyrants and arrogant, who transgressed (all bounds in disbelief and disobedience, and has behaved as an arrogant and as tyrant) so He destroyed them and they became lessons to people who came after. 11) Glorifying Allah as in many invocations and supplications as in these three Hadiths.

  44. Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: Whenever the Prophet  got up at night to offer the Tahajjud prayer, he used to say: “Allahummalakal-hamd anta Qaiyimussamawatiwal-ardwa man fihinna.
