  1. What is the UK like?

  2. Connector What can you remember?

  3. Objectives

  4. By the end of the lesson • All pupils will have identified places they know in Southall • Most pupils will have described their journey from their home to Southall

  5. Look at your map of Southall Maps are important in Geography. How can we use them? We are going to identify some places we know. Maps can look messy with labels unless we keep them neat. We can do this by using a key: • On your map create a key: ■ = My house

  6. How do you get there? • Add your school to your key and shade it in a colour on your map • Work out your route from your house to the school and colour it in you wish. • If your house isn’t on the map choose another location (e.g train station) and draw how you would get to the school from there.

  7. Describe your journey to school in your books Remember to add which direction you are walking in (N,E,S,W), for how long, what road you walk along and what you pass Extension: Describe your route to school to the person next to you.

  8. An example As I walk out of Southall train station, I turn south. I reach the roundabout and continue walking straight ahead onto The Green. As I walk along, I pass ……………………… I continue to walk in a southerly direction onto King street and pass ……………….. As the road reaches Montague Waye and Norwood Road I turn ……………

  9. Describe • What type of words did the person next to you use? • What other words could they have used instead?

  10. How could we describe the village of Thakeham? The village of Thakeham lies to the east of Pulborough. It has a church and is joined to the village of Abingworth by a secondary road. The name of Abingworth suggests that this place grew up around a farm. To the south-west of Abingworth is the site of an old Roman Road. South of this road are tumuli - burial places of the Ancient Britons.

  11. Describe your journey in your books! Remember to add which direction you are walking in (N,E,S,W), for how long, what road you walk along and what you pass

  12. On your map of Southall, add 3 more places to your key that are important to you • You should now have 5 places listed in your key, each with a different colour used • These places should be identified on your map

  13. In your books, write the title ‘Places that are important to me in Southall’ Write a brief explanation of why each place is important to you. Follow this writing frame: Eg. These playing fields are important to me because I play football with my brother here on a Saturday

  14. We know about Southall but what other places are in the UK? Brainstorm in your pairs and be ready to feed back in 2 minutes.

  15. Where would you like to visit? Have a look at the following images – where would you like to go? Why would you like to go there?

  16. Isle of Skye

  17. Yorkshire

  18. Loch Lomond

  19. Bournemouth

  20. Blackpool

  21. Manchester

  22. Locating places on a map of the UK • Look at the different pictures of places in the UK? • Out of the six shown, where would you like to go. • Can you explain why?

  23. What do we mean by explain? Firstly I would like to go to …………….. because ……………….. Secondly, I would like to go here ……… Finally, I would go here ………….. What will you talk about?

  24. Who would like to read their work out?

  25. Can you point where the city is?
