A group of various ethnic groups that all united under one ruler • Even though said ruler conquered them • They ruled until 1260 • And much of their success was because of • Communications/passport system • Tolerance for culture/religions • Later they assimilated into cultures including • Islamic • Christian • And other European/ Asian cultures Who were they really?

Helped to unite a confederacy of groups • Buryats, Merkits, Kirghiz, and more • Real Name: Temudjin • Known for being a fierce warrior and ruler of an empire that stretched to Europe • Became tribe leader around the age of 12 or 13 (though he was kidnapped and then escaped) • It was after a fight when he began to gather many followers • Religiously tolerant Genghis Khan

Humans lived in India for about 75,000 years • 1500-500 BC: the foundation of the Hindu Religion • Known as the Vedic Period • Fell under the rule of Darius the Great, and Alexander the Great for a short time (ok well a couple of centuries each) • Between 1526 and 1857 • Babur = Mungal Empire (until 1600) – around 1707 it fell into decline • 1857 – India’s first war for independence • Colonial Times: • 16th century: Portugal, Netherlands, France, UK established trading posts which soon turned to colonies due to conflicts • From 1600 to 1947 – The UK rule partly due to the East India Trading Company Before its Independence

Eisenhower (start of the Korean War) OR President Richard Nixon (end of the Vietnam War), telling them why you do or do not agree with U.S. involvement in the Korean and Vietnamese Conflicts. Be sure to convince him that you are keeping up with the Wars’ details.   27. Born Dec. 26, 1893 (Died Sept. 9, 1976) • Was a peasant trained in teaching, and began to read Marxist books in the library • Chinese Marxist Theorist, Soldier, statesman • 1921: founder of Chinese Communist Party • Rocky relationship with the Kuomintang (KMT) nationalist party Mao Zedong

Mao and his CCP were allies and then enemies, then allies, and then enemies again with the KMT nationalist party • 1927: Chiang Kai-Shek launched anti-communist purge • 1937 -1945: allied against Japan • But civil war broke out shortly after • October 1, 1949: People’s Republic of China was founded • A fleeing Kai-Shek went to Taiwan • The Reshaping of Chinese Society: • Industry: under State Ownership • Farming: organized into collectives • Opposition: Crushed • Friendly with Soviets but that began to cool. And the Rise of Communism

Launched in 1958 • A more “Chinese” communistic form (More Communism yeah?!?) • Wanted more focus on labor and improvement on industry and agriculture. • Didn’t happen • There was a massive decline in agricultural output – which led to poor harvests • This led to famine, and millions of people died. • Soon this ‘idea’ was abandoned and Mao’s position was weakened. Great Leap Forward?

  30. “ To read too many books is harmful.” Mao Zedong • Tried to re-assert his power and authority Mao’s cultural Revolution was launched in 1966 • This aimed to purge the country of ‘impure’ element • Over 1.5 million people died • Much of the cultural heritage was lost or destroyed. • 1967: many cities were on the verge of anarchy • He sent an army in. • Urged the students and youth to openly criticize and go back to the basic principles of revolution • Concerned about the developing classes Cultural Revolution…
