Sensor Web Definition(1) • A Sensor Web is a coordinated observation infrastructure composed of a distributed collection of resources - e.g., sensors, platforms, models, communications infrastructure - that can collectively behave as a single, autonomous, task-able, dynamically adaptive and reconfigurable observing system that provides raw and processed data, along with associated meta-data, via a set of standards-based service-oriented interfaces. ( FromAIST meeting with NASA Sensor Web PI’s, ~40 participants discussing concepts, architectures, features and benefits of sensor webs)

  4. Sensor Web Definition(2) “Group of potentially muti-modal data gathering devices coupled with computational intelligence and communication such that the overall system capabilities transcend those provided by a group of isolated sensors” (from John M. Dolan 2007)‏

  6. It’s an Open System • Interoperability • React to environment (Adaptability) • Increases survivability • Interoperability within the system • Portability from one platform to another • Open standards

  7. Nature Reserve in China • 2194 Nature Reserves • 1.5 million ha or 15% of total land area This is equivalent to six times the area of Britain !! And estimated to contain more people than Sweden. This is a massive responsibility and governance issue

  8. Lack of monitoring • Self Assessment, monitoring and evaluation weak. • Supervision and inspection by provincial/national superiors weak • Reporting weak • There needs to be improved implementation and coordination among CBD, UNFCC and UNCCD
