  1. Agricultural Careers Auctioneer By: Dr. Frank Flanders and Katie Murray Georgia Agricultural Education Curriculum Office Georgia Department of Education June 2005 START

  2. What does an Auctioneer do? An auctioneer conducts public sales where items are sold to the highest bidder. An auctioneer is responsible for determining the relative value of the items being auctioned. Descriptions are prepared for each item and the auctioneer should be present if a preview is held for prospective buyers. Arrangements for the marketing and advertising of the sale are also handled by the auctioneer. The job auctioneers are most known for takes place during the actual sale. It is their job to urge the bidder to make the highest offer possible. After the highest offer has been repeated three times the bidding is closed on that item and the next item is presented.

  3. What are some common types of auctions? Agricultural auctions include livestock auction barns, internet auctions, horse auctions, tobacco warehouse auctions, surplus equipment auctions as well as the dreaded farm foreclosure sale. Land auctions are also common as some farms are surrounded by encroaching subdivisions and the land becomes more valuable for home sites than for farm land or green space. Auctions may be indoors or outdoors

  4. What personal qualities are needed? An auctioneer must have an extremely friendly personality and good sense of humor. They need to be able to entertain people while keeping the auction moving at a fast pace. At the same time they must be aggressive and persuasive. An auctioneer must have good judgment as to the relative value of items. Good communication skills and knowledge about items for sale will help in persuading one to purchase an item. Last but not least, to be a good auctioneer a person must be able to perform the auctioneer’s fast rhythmic chant with a strong voice.

  5. What are the education requirements? Graduation from high school is preferable for an individual pursuing a career as an auctioneer. It is possible to become an auctioneer without attending a four year college or university. However, it is becoming more common to earn a college degree. Most auctioneers attend an auctioneering school after high school, which last about three weeks, or 80 hours. These schools emphasize voice training, the auctioneer’s chant, laws governing auctions and specialty sales. It is possible for an individual to become an auctioneer without any postsecondary schooling. Those whose families are in the auction business can get started at an early age by working as a clerk or bid caller. Family members and other individuals often enter the business by training under an experienced auctioneer.

  6. How much will I earn? Most auctioneers work on a commission basis. However some work as employees and contract auctioneers. Auctioneers are usually paid a percentage of the sales price depending on the items being auctioned. Earnings vary depending on whether the auctioneer works on a part-time or full-time basis. An auctioneer generally earns between $40,000 and $50,000 annually, but can earn much less than that or much more.

  7. What are other careers I can explore? • Agricultural Sales Representative • Commodities Broker • Equipment Dealer • Livestock Buyer/Broker
