  1. AZOMP – Atlantic Zone Offshore Monitoring Program1 ICES WGNARS Meeting 20-22 April 2010 Woods Hole, MA AZOMP collects and analyzes physical, chemical and biological oceanographic observations from the continental slope and deeper waters of the NW Atlantic. Its objective is to monitor variability in the ocean climate and plankton affecting regional climate and ecosystems off Atlantic Canada and the global climate system. 1http://www.bio.gc.ca/monitoring-monitorage/azomp-pmzao/index-eng.htm

  2. AZOMP Observation Component • Labrador Sea Monitoring Program (AR7W) • One cruise per year in the May/June period • PO component focuses on interannual variability in water mass properties and circulation, and related atmospheric and ice conditions. • CO component focuses on nutrients, the carbon cycle, carbon dioxide storage, and chemical tracers which indicate circulation patterns and rates. • BO component focuses on lower-trophic-level (bacteria, phytoplankton, zooplankton) biomass, productivity and biogenic carbon inventories (particulate and dissolved organic carbon).

  3. AZOMP Observation Component • Scotian Slope/Rise Monitoring Program (XHL) • Sampling occurs at end of Lab Sea cruise in May/June • PO component focuses on the water mass properties of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) and the upper-ocean Slope Water. • CO component focuses on nutrients, oxygen and chemical tracers from which the extent and speed of the DWBC can be inferred. • BO component focuses on off-shelf biomass and growth dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton and how those populations influenced the growth and distribution of plankton on the shelf and downstream.

  4. AZOMP Observation Component • Argo Float Program • Used to complement observations from AR7W and XHL • BIO is one of the DFO oceanographic labs which contribute to the International Argo Program. • T & S profiles are used in developing AZOMP indices and products. • Complementary Observations • Remote sensing SST and color through AZMP • Met. and sea ice observations • Slope and deep water obs from AZMP • Monitoring of flows through Canadian Archipelago an Davis Strait Argo float locations as of 16 Feb 2010

  5. Reporting and Products • Daily (near-real-time) transmission of temperature and salinity profiles from the AZOMP surveys to DFO’s ISDM for availability to national and international data and operational centres, via the Global Transmission Service (GTS). • Development of integrative indices for regular update and availability via the AZOMP website[1], such as for the vertical structure of temperature and salinity in the central Labrador based on Argo and other data. • Website availability of preliminary products from annual AZOMP surveys of the AR7W line and XHL (in progress). • Timely availability of quality-controlled datasets to national and international data centres, collaborators and programs. • Annual reports to key annual national and international fora such as the meetings of AZMP (March), ICES WGOH (March-April) and NAFO Scientific Council (June). • An annual report to the AZMP Bulletin[2]. • Presentation of the state-of-the-NW-Atlantic to at least one national and one international scientific meeting each year. • Interpretative scientific publications on ocean climate and ecosystem variability in the off-shelf NW Atlantic, generally in conjunction with research projects or special initiatives.
