  1. (LEARNT THROUGH FAIR TRADE ORGANIZATION OF KENYA)PRODUCTIVITY CHALLENGEA. CONTACT DETAILS:

  2. B.) CONSTRAINS LIMITING COFFEE PRODUCTIVITY • Lack of enough resources and finances to buy farm inputs. • Poor soil due to acidity as a result of continuous use of fertilizers. • Pest and diseases infestation • Lack of enough man power as most of the youth are looking for white collar jobs in urban areas.

  3. CONT…… • Changing weather patterns hence making people confused on what to plant and when to prepare their farms in readiness for rain. • Poor payment to farmers which reduces their morale to continue working in their coffee fields

  4. C.) STRATEGIES TO INCREASE COFFEE PRODUCTION • Encouraging farmers to adopt Organic agriculture practices. • Organic farming would be the way to go as the materials for making compost and other products for pest and disease control are cheap since they are readily available in the farm. • Reduce the rate at which chemical fertilizers are applied in the coffee fields.

  5. CONT…… • The system is also environmentally friendly in that, it doesn’t pollute the soils and air.

  6. EXTENSION OF STRATEGIES TOWARDS IMPROVED COFFEE PRODUCTIVITY • Developing small agronomy booklet with picture illustrations and translated into the language that farmers can understand. • Set up demo plots in strategic locations where farmers can come and learn Good Agricultural Practices geared towards sustainable agriculture.

  7. IMPACTS TO INCREASE COFFEE PRODUCTIVITY • As a result of adopting sustainable practices farmers will produce more and the quality will improve thus earn enough income from coffee sales. • The farmers will improve their living standards

  8. EXTENT OF REPLICATION BY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND FARMERS. • This practice will increase coffee productivity ones the soils get used to the organic inputs like compost manure. • The practice has received an overwhelming support from our farmers because it involves feeding the soil well leading to stronger with healthier and better yields.

  9. The method can be replicated in various geographical areas as it involves using what is provided by nature.
