  1. What is CEIC? • A web based catalog of environmental data for California. • CEIC stores “metadata” not the data itself. • Metadata is information that describes a resource: • What type of data it is (e.g. digital image, hard copy report, etc.). • Who created it and for what purpose. • How to obtain it (e.g. file download, mail hard copy). • Much more. • CEIC uses a metadata standard called: Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD-001 June 1998)Commonly called the “FGDC metadata standard”* *Note that other standards exist, e.g. ISO 19115

  2. What is CaSIL? • Library • Catalog (CEIC) • Datasets • Priority to State Government (Base Layers, Natural Resources) • 10% Entries in CEIC managed with CERES • 100% of data in CaSIL managed with CERES • One big online GIS filesystem • FTP, HTTP, RSYNC, Directory Mounts • Not High Tech • No Clip&Ship or Web GIS viewer • Not so true anymore CaSIL is a Library of Spatial data products of importance to the State of California, providing a simple interface to the largest audience.

  4. CEIC / CaSIL Statistics • 4500 CEIC Records, 200 Organizations • 182K files, 42K images, ~200 vector products • ~20 Tb online = 30 Gb/day (50 Gb/day currently) • ~ 5 Tb offline • ~ 1.5 M image requests, ~50K vector requests

  5. Statewide Framework Data

  6. Example “Official” Datasets

  7. Collaborative Tools • Describe Your Data • Better Standard Adoption • Integrate with other Tools • ArcCatalog, SMMS • Locate Your Data • Digital Gazetteer • Spatial Keywords • MapIT! Location Picker • Contribute Your Data (GFORGE)

  8. CaSIL Gforge • Open Source Gforge Collaboration Tools (15th Biggest) • Advantages • Secure Users, Access Control • Mailing Lists, Forums, Notification, Web sites • File Releases, Version Control, User Ratings • Problems • Different Skill set Software developer vs. GIS professional • No Good integration with GIS specific tools • Version control very different
