  9. Vocabulary Strategy • Objectives: • Use word structure to determine the meaning of compound words.

  10. Word Structure • When you are reading, you may come across a long word that looks like two words. Look closely at the word. Do you see two small words in it? It may be a compound word. • Divide the compound word into its twosmall words. • Think of the meaning of each small word,and put the two meanings together. • Try the new meaning in the sentence.Does it make sense?

  11. The two words in waterfalls are water and falls. I know what water is. Falls means "to fall down." So waterfalls refers to "water that falls down over something."

It took seven minutes to reach the peak by cable car. • I can use sensory words such as majestic and grand. • I can vary the lengths of my sentences, making some very short and others much longer. • These can all be elements of my writing style.
