  1. STAAR Parent Overview Pebble Hills Elementary Administration 2012-2013

  2. Agenda for Meeting • TAKS vs. STAAR, What’s the Difference? • What does STAAR assess? • What is Rigor? • STAAR Writing 4th grade • STAAR Reading/Math 3rd-5th grade • Testing Day Format • Parent Resources

  3. TAKS vs. STAAR, What’s the Difference? • STAAR testing is limited to 4 hours per content area tested, • Testing accommodations for students have been drastically reduced, • Little to no “simple recall” questions. More two and three step questions • The STAAR test is more “rigorous” than previous TAKS tests.

  4. What does the STAAR test? • Teachers are required to teach the TEKS or Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, • They are a set of skills that the state of Texas has determined are essential for each student to learn, • Each grade level has a very specific set of TEKS for each content area, • STAAR tests the TEKS at a high level of understanding or “rigor.”

  5. What is Rigor? • Rigor “is disassembling information into its component parts and then reassembling those component parts into a new integral whole to solve problems or answer questions” • Students have been provided lessons throughout the year to promote “rigor” in their learning • Higher-order learning

  6. What is a Readiness and Supporting Standard? • Both Readiness standards and Supporting standards will be tested on STAAR, • Readiness standards – These TEKS are considered the most important preparing students to succeed in the next grade or course (on any given test the majority of the test items (approx 60—70%) will assess readiness standards. • Supporting standards – These TEKS play a role in preparing students for the next grade or course, but not a central role.

  7. STAAR Writing 4th grade • Two day test • First day- Grammar/Revising portion and a Composition • Second day- Grammar/Revising portion and a Composition • Students answer multiple choice questions regarding passages and sentence structure • Focus is on proper use of grammar and spelling

  8. STAAR Writing 4th grade • Composition prompts will be either Expository or Narrative, • Students will be able to pre-write/plan their composition, • Students will have only 26 lines in which to complete their essay, • Students will have to complete the grammar part, the pre-writing part, and the final composition within the 4 hour limit!

  9. STAAR Expository Prompts4th grade Expository essays are simply essays that explain something with facts, as opposed to opinion. Samples of expository essays include: Essays that described how to do something, Essays that analyze events, ideas, objects, or written works, Essays that describe a process, Essays that explain/describe an historical event.

  10. STAAR Narrative Prompts4th grade When you write a narrative essay, you are telling a story. Narrative essays are told from the point of view of the author. Sensory details are provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence of the story. The verbs are vivid and precise! When the writer uses this technique, he or she must be sure to include all the conventions of storytelling: plot, character, setting, climax, and ending. It is usually filled with details that are carefully selected to explain, support, or embellish the story.
