HOW TO HATE Christians must learn to hate
Hate is a strong word • Hate is a very strong word • Dictionary – “to have strong dislike or ill will for; loathe; despise” • We associate Christianity with love, forgiveness, mercy, and compassion • But the Bible teaches us to hate
SCRIPTURES • Psalm 97:10a - You who love the Lord, hate evil! • Amos 5:15a - Hate evil, love good; Establish justice in the gate.
SCRIPTURES • Jude 21-23 - 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22 And on some have compassion, making a distinction; 23 but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
SCRIPTURES • Hebrews 1:9 - You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed YouWith the oil of gladness more than Your companions.“ • Revelation 2:6 - But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
SCRIPTURES • Malachi 2:16 - "For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence," Says the Lord of hosts. • Romans 7:15 - For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
Proverbs 6:16-19 • 16These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
The Struggle in Us • There is a struggle in each of us • We know what is right / wrong • Sometimes we do what is wrong • Then we hate it that we have sinned • We hate the wrong – but we give in to the temptation
How to Hate 1 - Be like a surgeon: • Remove the disease • Cause no unnecessary pain • Hate the disease – fight it with a passion • Same is true of sin – abortion, cursing, homosexuality, gossip, cruelty, lying
How to Hate 2 - Separate the sin from the sinner • Oppose the THING that is wrong • Don’t say, “You are wrong”; “Homosexuals are - -”; “Liars are - -” • Say, “What you did was wrong”; “Lying is - -”; “Homosexuality is - -”
Can I do this? • We do this every day • We hate some of the things we do • I yell at myself when I play golf • I hate the shot I just made • BUT: I still like me • LEARN TO HATE THE SIN – AND LOVE THE SINNER
Examples from Jesus • Woman at the well • John 4:17-19 - 17 The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husband,'18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly."19 The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
Examples from Jesus • Adulterous woman • John 8:10-11 - 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, "Woman, where are those accusers of yours?Has no one condemned you?"11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go andsin no more."
Conclusion • Christianity requires a love / hate mindset • We must hate the things that God hates • We must love the people that God loves
