Newton’s Science Morning! Made by Emily and Amelia
Caterpillar Thriller • In this activity we was put in teams and we tried to find pieces of string that represented caterpillars; they were hidden in our school field. At the end of our task we observed our results to see who had collected the most and what colours they were. We found that the least common colour was green ; this was because it was camouflaged into the grass. Animals have camouflage to keep themselves away from any predators. However animals that are brightly coloured are this colour because it shows that they are poisonous.
Spinning Spectrum • This activity involved us making a spectrum of 6 different colours: red, yellow, blue, orange, green and purple. When we had made it we put a pencil through the middle and spun it on the table. Another way to spin it was: spinning it in the air or spinning it between your hands. The result of doing this was to see what colour we could see when they were all spinning around at speed. We found that our eyes weren't quick enough to focus on one colour so to our eyes it looked as if they had all been mixed together to make brown.
SPLAT! • Another activity was called SPLAT! This involved putting paint in a zip lock bag and creating lots of different colours. In this activity we learnt how to create many different colours from just the primary colours: red, yellow, blue. At the end of the activity we talked about how we made those colours. All of the groups had massaged the colours to make secondary colours. We understood that if we rapidly mixed the colours it would become brown/purple. This happened because it was an unfair test because not everyone put in the same amount of coloured paint.
Splitting Ink! • Our final activity was splitting ink. As you might know the activity was all about INK!!! First we drew on a piece of tissue with various different colours. Next, we dipped it in water and the colour ran. We did this various times with felt tips. We also did it with fountain pen ink and we found that the results were different. This was because the colour did run but it stayed the same colour.
