  1. La mola Los indios Cuna de Panamá

  2. Cuna/ Kuna • The Cuna/Kuna Indians live on the San Blas Islands off the Caribbean coast of Central America. • The Cuna lived on the mainland at one time, but during the 17th and 18th centuries they fled to the islands to avoid the Spanish invaders. Here they were able to keep their native traditions alive.

  3. Cuna/ Kuna • Historically the Cuna wore very little clothing. Instead they decorated their bodies with brightly colored pictures of birds, flowers, trees, and animals. • In the mid 1800’s a group of French Protestants, called the Hueguenots, came to live among the Cuna and taught them the skills of embroidering. The mola was born.

  4. Cuna/ Kuna • Molas today are brightly embroidered (hand-sewn) blouses of various designs. Each one is unique because it is handmade. • Women are the head of the Cuna society today. The men travel by boat to the mainland daily to tend to the fields and bring home food and fresh water.
