Vocab Definitions • Elite: A group of people considered to be the best in a particular society because of their wealth, power, or talent. • Glyph: A sculpted (carved) hieroglyphic symbol that makes up the Mayan writing system. • Sacrifice: An act of slaughtering an animal or person as an offering to the gods • Variety: being different or diverse; having different kinds of something; not the same.

The Mayans were located in Mesoamerica; The Highlands of Guatemala, Lowlands of Guatemata, Belize, and the Yucatan Peninsula in Southern Mexico • A class system developed in Mayan society because of the division of labor, and division of labor developed because of agricultural surplus. • Mayan society was divided into ruler, nobility, peasant, and slave classes. • Mayan rulers’ jobs were to govern each city and also act as priests.

Mayans tried to get help from their gods by fasting, praying, and offering sacrifices (sometimes human sacrifice!). • Some noteable features of Mayan cities were palaces, ball courts, pyramids, and steles (large stone monuments that represented important dates and events). • Having an accurate number system was important to the Maya because it helped them create calendars which helped them make important decisions such as when to plant or harvest crops and when to go to war. Also helped them keep precise records of events.. • Mayans recorded information by carving glyphs on steles and writing glyphs on codexes (bark paper books).
