  30. From Those Who Did It…

  31. It Is Who You Know - I stumbled upon an announcement for a position in Experience-based education and the contact identified was the Associate Provost who happened to be that advisement coordinator that I had worked for in college so many years before. I contacted her to inquire about that position and she remembered me.  - I must admit that I got that job from networking since I did not have a lot of experience in Career services . A colleague of mine at SCCC recommended me to the Director of Career Services at Sage and he hired me. - In January of 2011, my old mentor and boss forwarded me the job opening for my current position.

  33. It Is Who You Know - After moving back to WNY, I was applying for positions and networking with former SUNYCDO Colleagues.  A temporary position came open at Buffalo State, and Lisa August contacted me to see if I would be interested.  - As an RHD, I sought ways to engage with other parts of campus: committee work, liaison role on behalf of my department, and the like, whereby I could learn about the other parts of the university, and built a network of colleagues. I feel like my biggest break was having a connection with the interviewer. We had similar backgrounds in res life and she also scaled back work when she had children.

  35. It Is Who You Know -I did an internship in the Career Services office while in my second year as a Hall Director.  Luckily a position opened in the Career Office months after I left the Hall Director position and out of 200+ resumes got an interview and the job due to the positive relationship I built within the office.  - I was recruited for my first job in Higher Ed by a friend's father who needed an employer outreach person for their Student Employment service. - I was at a pizza shop and saw the older sister of some guys I used to hang out with as a teen and in my early 20’s. She asked what I was up to and I told her the above. She said she was the Director of Admissions at NCCC and talked to me about building my network and keeping my network open by making periodic contacts with people in my network, including her. I did. She called me on a Friday 2 months later and told me she had a temporary (3 month) Support Staff position open in Admissions and I would have to start Monday

  37. It Is Who You Know Moral of the story Drinking beer in the Director of Admissions’ parents’ garage with her 3 younger brothers can lead to a satisfying career.

  38. It is What You Know - It was all about taking on as many opportunities as you can that you're passionate about and going above and beyond that gave me the experience I needed to get my foot in the door at the Compass.   - Because of my experience at Cortland, they hired me temporarily for 3 months.  After 3 months, I was offered the permanent position. - I worked hard and got involved in whatever projects I could.  - While I was in grad school (M.Ed. in Counseling) I did a graduate assistantship in Residence Life.  I worked full-time professionally as a residence hall director for the next 3 years before I couldn’t stand it anymore… - …working closely with human resources personnel in a variety of businesses.  From there, I was able to get a job as an “Employer Relations Counselor” in the Career Center at Siena College

  40. It is What You Know - …and it was an internship that got me here. - I interned in Admissions as an undergrad and also had my work study job there.  I got a job at SU Law in Admissions and Financial Aid in what I consider basically a glorified secretary position.  - I did a graduate program that had a focus in Student Affairs.  I interned with both Career Services and Advisement and Transition.  After my internship ended, a job opened up in Career Services (Career Resource Specialist) which was offered to me.  - My semester long of facilitating the course allowed me to find my true passion for my career and future. My self-discovery experience allowed me to piece together a lot of the pieces of my puzzle. For years I had been give friends, family, friends of friends, and individuals advice on careers, education, and jobs.  The thought of doing career counseling and development for a living never lit up a light bulb in my head.

  42. It is What You Know - By hearing about the opening a year in advance, I was able to gain the skills and experience for the job.  - I started out as a hall director and ended up in Career Services.  During my graduate work I did an assistantship in a Career Services office and one in the Student Activities office. - During my Master’s in Student Personnel Program, I was a Residence Hall Assistant Director and did internships in Wellness - I began my higher education career as a Residence Hall Director, then took a job where I was both Residence Life and Student Activities.  With that experience I became a Student Life Coordinator.  As the years passed, I grew tired of this work and researched what else in higher education would provide me with more satisfaction and be a better fit.  I read, shadowed and conducted information interviews and narrowed my choice to Career Services

  44. It is What You Know - Since I had no direct career services experience other than serving as an academic advisor and co-teaching a counseling class while a Residence Hall Director, I decided to save up my money for a year in the job I was in, and then I left my job. With the money I saved to live on, I interned at a large university and a small private school in career services to gain the experience I felt I needed to be a competitive candidate.  I also took a class vocational psychology for additional perspective.  - As a result of the internship, when an opportunity opened up at the large university, I was asked to apply and ended up receiving an offer!!  I have worked there ever since and am still loving career services. - I had to do an internship and ended-up doing one at Alfred State College because that’s where my boyfriend was.

  46. The Crazies: - I had an appointment with a career counselor and at some point during that meeting I said to myself, “I could do what he’s doing!”  That started the whole ball rolling. Not a very exciting story but when I tell it in person I use shadow puppets. - I started out in Building Services… cleaning toilets and mopping floors. I was pretty good at it but thought “I can do more”.  So one day I was cleaning the Associate Director of the Career and Transfer Centers Office and I decided to poor my mop water into her water bottle.  The bleach killed her within a few hours and I moved right in. That’s my story. Hope others learn from it. - Let's just say that the person who used to have my job has never been heard from again....

  48. My Best Advice • Figure out what you want • Look for next job the day you are hired • Make connections between have & want • Get related and varied experience • Help org. grow and be able to demonstrate • Network ALL the time • Do what you have to do, not what you want • Forget what your job is and what you make

  49. More of My Best Advice • When your boss asks, jump • VERY hard work does not equal burnout • Expect to be evaluated, or evaluate • Do the next job • Accept feedback • You AND your employer are paid to have a brain
