  2. Before We Begin: Do you have: • A notebook? • A nametag • A partner? • A class captain?

  3. Warm-up! Talk to your partner about a political current event.

  4. Review Last week we talked about political ideology.

  5. Ideology: Liberal vs. Conservative Ideology = A system of ideas. Liberal: Open to change, believe humans can fix social problems. Conservative: Cautious of change, and suspicious of human efforts to fix social problems.

  6. Review Match the words and definitions:

  7. Review Discuss the following issues with a partner. What’s your point of view? • Is the death penalty ever ok? • Would you be ok if your best friend told you they were gay/lesbian? • Should the government support big companies like LG and Samsung?

  9. Homework Find some interesting information related to the topic of “Economics and Equality”. Summarize the information in English.

  10. Homework Research tips: • Search for news articles or read a part of a book. Don’t use wikipedia, dictionaries, etc. -The information can be in another language (Korean, Chinese, etc.) • Do not copy information from the Internet or from a book. Copying will result in minus 1 point. • Summarize the information in English using your own words. Try to write at least a paragraph.

  11. Researching and Summarizing: Find some interesting information related to the topic. • Think of something interesting. • Search for some information. (eg. research websites, news articles or books)

Researching and Summarizing: Find the most important points and summarize them. • Article about gap between rich and poor. • Information from a report by Oxfam. • Rich are getting richer, poor are getting poorer. - Top 85 people = bottom 3.5 billion • Inequality between countries is getting better. • Opinion: there is a big problem because a few rich people can control most of the world.

  14. Homework Exchange your homework with a partner. Read it and give them feedback. Then, talk about the issue. What do you think about it?

Today’s Class: Week 3 Topic: Economics and Equality Key skill: understand and talk about key economic forces in English. • Learn about the differences between “capitalism”, “socialism” and “communism”. • Learn key vocabulary and concepts related to economics. • Discuss some important economic current events.

  18. Economic Systems Different economic systems have different points of view on how to manage the economyand how to solve economic problems.

  19. Brainstorm In your notebooks, brainstorm words you associate with each system: Capitalism Communism

  20. Capitalism • Key points: • Private ownership of property, • trade and production • Individualism • Competition in free-market • Government may manage • economy • Making money = good for society

  24. Socialism For Karl Marx, socialism was stage between capitalism and full communism. In practice, usually involves mix of free-market and government management. Also, strong welfare system.

  25. Liberal and Conservative Most liberals and conservatives in Western countries support capitalism. Also, many countries support mixed economies.
