  1. Soundscapes • Illustrate the mind with sound

  2. Think with your ears • Take a out a piece of paper and listen to the following sound clips. Write down as many descriptive words as you can. Be ready to share.

  3. Things to think about • What time of day is it? • What colors are you envisioning? • Who or what may be present? • What does it feel like (touch) • What does it smell like?

  4. Now try this one • Use your senses • Fine attention to detail • Be descriptive, even narrative

  5. What did I tell you! • The video edit is the easy part! Audio is where your project will truly shine. Taking your time with audio will make or break the legitimacy of your work, and separate it from the rest!

  6. Sound and Production • After a film is shot and enters post-production the addition of sound, and sound effects get done before the musical score is added. Any sound that is not usable from the take needs to be recreated. This recreated sound is called FOLEY.

  7. Foley • Foley refers to the process of recording sounds and effects separately and adding them to the final cut of a film or video.

  8. Foley • Replaces sounds that are recorded naturally • Poor Quality • Cover up mistakes • Actual sound created by props may not sound as desired • Allows for complete control

  9. Foley • Compensates for oddly/poorly position microphones • Look to achieve depth and realism • Go mostly unnoticed if done correctly • Specialty career: Foley Artist

  10. Foley Artist • A foley artist is a person, who alone, or on a small team recreates many if not all of the sounds that a movie needs to sound realistic. • Works on a sound stage, or recording studio. • Uses a variety of ‘practical effects’

  11. Foley Artist

  12. Soundtrack Pro • The Basics

  13. Soundtrack pro • Continue your workflow directly from Final Cut Pro! • Fine tune your edit with sound effects, music beds, and effects. • Export to go directly back into Final Cut

  14. From final Cut App Menu --> File -->Send To --> Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project

  15. From final Cut I strong recommend saving it the same as your final cut project with the addition of “sound” at the end. ex. Banana_Project_Sound

  16. Application Menu Timeline Meters Inspector Mixer Playback Browser/Search

  17. Inspector • The Inspector will show the video portion of the project as well as project information. • Effects are also listed down below in the effects tab. • (modifications)

  18. Timeline Audio Track Video

  19. Mixer The mixer allows you to see the levels of each track, and adjust individually using sliders

  20. Meters Meters give us the over-all volume for the whole project. We should still aim to be between -6 and -12

  21. Browser/Search We can use pre-set categories to filter out sounds. OR The Search tool allows us to look for sound effect by typing it in.

  22. Browser / Search • We can also select between: • Sound Effects • Music Loops • Individual Instruments

  23. Timeline and Mixer • Tracks in the timeline cross list in the mixer. They are identical in every capacity.

  24. Quick Fades • To FADE: Look for the icon that looks like an envelope and drag into your clip • To SHORTEN: Look for the bracket with the arrows

  25. Export • Need MASTER MIX • AIFF File • Always 16bit • Always 48khz

  26. Back to FCP • From here you would take the exported SOUNDTRACK PRO file, and IMPORT it into FINAL CUT PRO! • Easy Peasy!
