  2. Definition • Any object that is released into the air becomes projectile. All projectiles are affected by factors that determine how high and how far they go. • Regardless of the type of object that is being released or by what means, they are all affected by the same basic principles.

  3. Our own definition • Projectile motion refers to the motion of an object projected into the air at an angle.Examples of this include a soccer ball begin kicked, a baseball begin thrown, or an athletelong jumping.

  4. How and why is applied/ relevant in sport? • In the projectile motion, when the object is thrown at angle of 45 degrees, it travels the largest distance. So, in the sports like javelin throw and shot put, by throwing the spear and the iron ball, respectively, at an angle of 45 degrees, one can cover a large distance, without putting out much effort.

  6. Page 77 – Workbook 1. In this example, which is higher, initial vertical velocity or initial horizontal velocity and what is the likely outcome? Answer: The direction the ball is travelling indicates initial vertical velocity is greater. The ball will travel high. Probably an easy fly ball and easy catch.

  7. 2. What would be the advantages of having a high initial vertical and in which sports would this occur? Answer: This gives more height and time in the air without a lot of horizontal distance. For example: high jump, gymnastics tumbling.

  8. 3. What would be the advantages of having a high initial horizontal velocity and in which sports would this occur? Answer: This gives greater distance to the projectile. For example: long jump, javelin, discus , etc

  9. 4. How does the athlete ensure a good speed of release for the sport they are doing? Answer: If they are using a bat/racquet of even just an arm, the apply the principles of force summation.
