  2. The Three Estates

  3. The Members of each Estate • The First Estate was made up of the Catholic Church Clergy. Anyone who worked with the church, like Priests, Bishops, Monks, and people like them. • The Second Estate was made by the people of Nobility or of Noble and royal Families. • Then the Third Estate was made of all the other people in France. It had people from surfs still tied to the land to middle class of Bourgeoisie. Some other people in the Third estate were, peasants, merchants, business owners, laborers and many other workers.

Population of each Estate • The First Estate being the Clergy had the least amount of members at about 130,000 or 1% of France. • The Second Estate was the nobles and they had more members then the First but less but still had only a fraction of the population at about 300,000 or 2%. • Then the Third and last estate had the most members by a long shot. They had the rest of the population or about 97%

  5. Privileges of the Estates • The First Estate like most other things had the best privileges. They were tax exempt so they didn’t have to pay any taxes on the land they owned. This was great for them because they had 10% of all the land in France. • The Second Estate like the First also had to pay little to no taxes even though they had the most money. They also could serve in high military officer positions and play a role in the government. • The Third Estate got the short end of the stick because they had little privileges. They had to pay almost all the taxes that let France run and with this they were treated like they were less then the other estates.

  6. Voting in the General Estates

  7. Who got what vote and how they voted • No matter how many members each group had they would still only get one vote. This was not fair for the Third Estate because they had the most people but still had to work with the little rich part of the population. • All the voting took place in Versailles. • The Third Estate would have a hard time getting change because the other two estate could just out vote them 2 to 1 if they thought that the change would hurt their power.
