  2. Double-space everything • Use 12 pt. Times New Roman Font • Leave only one space after punctuation • Set all margins to one inch on each side • Indent the first line of each paragraph General Guidelines

  3. Header with page numbers in upper right corner • Book titles should be italicized • Sources must be included in the Works Cited page General Guidelines (cont’d)

  4. No title page • In the upper left corner on the first page, list your name, your teacher’s name, the course, and date (DD Month YYYY) • Centre the essay title (no underlining, italics, quotes, or bold) Formatting the First Page

  5. MLA style uses parenthetical citations • These citations relate to corresponding entries in the Works Cited In-Text Citations

  6. In-text example: When Steinbeck first introduces George, he writes, “The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features” (2). OR Slim muses to George, “Maybe ever’body in the whole damn world is scared of each other” (Steinbeck 35). Author-Page Style

  7. Corresponding Works Cited Entry: Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men. London: Penguin Books, 1993. Print. NOTE If you only have one source, you mention their name in the first citation. After that, you can just include the page number.

A Works Cited page adheres to the same numbering as your essay • Works Cited entries go on their own separate page • Authors must be listed in alphabetical order • Works Cited must be titled, all entries are left-justified • If your citation goes over one line, you must indent the subsequent lines Works Cited
