  3. The meaning of Backup : In information technology, a backup or the process of backing up is making copies of data which may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. The verb form is back up in two words, whereas the noun is backup. Backups have two distinct purposes. The primary purpose is to recover data after its loss, be it by data deletion or corruption. Data loss is a very common experience of computer users. 67% of internet users have suffered serious data loss. The secondary purpose of backups is to recover data from an earlier time, according to a user-defined data retention policy, typically configured within a backup application for how long copies of data are required. Though backups popularly represent a simple form of disaster recovery, and should be part of a disaster recovery plan, by themselves, backups should not alone be considered disaster recovery.  Not all backup systems and/or backup applications are able to reconstitute a computer system, or in turn other complex configurations such as a computer cluster, active directory servers, or a database server, by restoring only data from a backup. 4. Since a backup system contains at least one copy of all data worth saving, the data storage requirements are considerable. Organizing this storage space and managing the backup process is a complicated undertaking. A data repository model can be used to provide structure to the storage. In the modern era of computing there are many different types of data storage devices that are useful for making backups. There are also many different ways in which these devices can be arranged to provide geographic redundancy, data security, and portability. Before data is sent to its storage location, it is selected, extracted, and manipulated. Many different techniques have been developed to optimize the backup procedure. These include optimizations for dealing with open files and live data sources as well as compression, encryption, and de-duplication, among others. Many organizations and individuals try to have confidence that the process is working as expected and work to define measurements and validation techniques. It is also important to recognize the limitations and human factors involved in any backup scheme. TuchathamTosakul M.2/2 No.13

  5. The purpose of backup : The primary purpose for the backup system is to provide for disaster recovery of key network servers and services including email, applications, databases, web pages, and servers hosting individual and group directories. Additionally, the backup system provides recovery of any file that has existed on a network server long enough to be caught in a regularly scheduled backup of that server. The backup system is not an archival system for storing information off-line for indefinite periods of time. SuvitPathomthanasarn M.2/2No.30

  6. How to install backup ? : Install Backup on Windows XP Home Edition ∙Insert the CD Rom and navigate to CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP ∙Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the wizard that installs Backup ∙When the wizard is complete, click Finish. SuvitPathomthanasarn M.2/2No.30

  7. How to use backup ? : You must have permissions as an administrator or as a backup operator on your computer to back up files and folders. Also, backup operators and administrators can back up and restore encrypted files and folders without decrypting the files or folders. 1.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup. The Backup or Restore Wizard starts. 2.Click Advanced Mode. 3.Click the Backup tab. 4. On the Job menu, click New. 5. Click to select the check boxes for the drives that you want to back up. If you want to be more specific in your selections, expand the drive that you want, and then click to select the check boxes for the files or folders that you want. 6. Click to select the System State check box. Note If you want to back up your system settings and your data files, back up all the data on your computer plus the System State data. The System State data includes such things as the registry, the COM+ class registration database, files under Windows File Protection, and boot files. ThanapoomBoondee M.2/2 No.22

  8. 7.In the Backup destination list, click the backup destination that you want touse. • 8.If you clicked File in the previous step, type the full path and file name that you want in the Backup media or file name box. You can also specify a network share as a destination for the backup file. • 9.Click Start Backup. The Backup Job Information dialog box appears. • 10.Under If the media already contains backups, use one of the following steps: • ·If you want to append this backup to previous backups, click Append this backup to the media. • ·If you want to overwrite previous backups with this backup, click Replace the data on the media with this backup. • 11.Click Advanced. • 12.Select the Verify data after backup check box. • 13.In the Backup Type box, click the type of backup that you want. When you click a backup type, a description of that backup type appears under "Description." • 14.Click OK, and then click Start Backup. A Backup Progress dialog box appears, and the backup starts. • 15.When the backup is complete, click Close. ThanapoomBoondee M.2/2 No.22

  9. Why we choose this program ? We choose this program because we want to study for use this program when our special work was lost so we can took our special work back from this program. Also, when our computer is can’t use , we would take it back from this program too. PattawanTangpattananon M.2/2 No.5

  10. The advantage and disadvantage of the backup : Advantages : - It does not backup items which did not change since last backup. This can lead to big time profits, making backups with short time interval (daily or less) possible. The bigger your files the more time you can win.- It cleans those items in the backup, which were cleaned in the source.- Easy to find back a file in the backup using Windows Explorer, as file and directory structure in backup is similar to the source.- It can backup to several kinds of drives like Zip, Yazz and (with the help of external software) even to CDs and DVDs.- You can select both files as directories as source items- Copy from several source drives to one disk possible. E.g. backup from c:\documents and d:\documents to e:\.- Nesting protection included to avoid backups with infinite duration. ThanapoomBoondee M.2/2 No.22

  11. Disadvantages : - There are limitations to the unregistered version. Up to about 5 items and a total of about 50MB selected size per normal project are allowed. Synchronized projects contain only 1 item in both unregistered and registered version; the unregistered version has a limit of about 20MB for these synchronizations. To get rid of this limitations go to the registration section. Registered version allows more than 1000 items and more than 1 billion GB for each project.- Impossible to spread one backup job over several disks. You must make several backup jobs to solve this problem.- The full 100% of a backup disk won't be used. At least take into account a loss of some percents.- Writing to CDs/DVDs requires the right CD-software like DirectCD, not included in this program.- If source items are selected which are system, hidden, or readonly files or directories, then they will all become normal, viewable and writable work files in the backup. If you restore such files you must restore manually these attributes if you feel it is necessary.- Some external programs can possibly avoid read access to some work files. If so, then close file and/or the program. TuchathamTosakul M.2/2 No.13
