  4. 10 SEARCH TRICKS • Search for time-based results • Search for images effectively • Search for specific file types • Search for trending topics and social tags • Search for scholarly articles and reports

  5. Search within Specific Domains • What are credible domains? • Example: herb gardening site:.info

  6. Search within a Particular Website • Great for large website with lots of content • Example: Volkswagen site: timesfreepress.com

  7. Search for Exact Phrases • Put terms in quotes • Example: “Call me Ishmael”

  8. Exclude off-topic results • This is especially useful for synonyms like Jaguar the car brand and jaguar the animal. • Example: jaguar speed -car

  9. Search for Either Word • Use OR to find pages that may have just one of several words. • Example: “Rock City” OR “Tennessee Aquarium”

  10. Search for Time-Based Results • Limit your results to a date range. • Example: Snowboarding Olympics from last hour.

  11. Search for Images Effectively • Specify image type, image size, file type, aspect ratio, etc. • Example: Panoramic jpeg photo of Olympic snowboarding

  12. Search for Specific File Types • Look for certain file types- .ppt, .pdf, .exl • Example: advanced google filetype: ppt

  13. Search for Trending Topics, Social Tags • Google recognizes # and @ • Example: #sochiproblems

  14. Search for Scholarly Articles, Reports • Google Scholar • Connect through UTC Library • Utilize My Library to save articles • Citation help
