  1. Building Enterprise GIS at the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection: 2003 Progress Information Technology Office Technical Applications & GIS (TAGIS) Unit May 11, 2004

  2. Newest Spatial Data Set Being Developed by WVDEP • EQuIS is an Oracle database system containing environmental sampling locations & results • Surface water samples • Groundwater samples • Geology samples Groundwater concentration of Benzene displayed in ArcGIS as colored contours

  3. Statewide Users Benefited from 2003 Improvements in the Interactive Mapper • In 1995 WVDEP pioneered WWW-based mapping • We continue that tradition today • Search via GNIS database • Search by County (new) • Search by watershed (new)

  4. Open Dump Project Results in Multimedia Benefits for Users • Open dump program mapper • Pulls data from Oracle client server RDBMS • Integrates field photos • Uses Statewide ‘96-’98 DOQQs as basemap

  5. Accomplishment 1: Number of ArcGIS Users Expanded Significantly in 2003 • Estimated power and frequent users at the beginning of 2003 was ~ 65. • During the year we added about 65 occasional and new users. • Projected increase in users in 2004 is expected to be ~ 50. 130

  6. Accomplishment 2: ArcObjects Customized Applications Development • Fielded WVDEP’s first, custom built, enterprise spatial application for the Division of Mining & Reclamation (DMR) in 2003. • Majority of new 2003 GIS users were DMR permitting staff • Trained ~ 60 people to use DMR’s new application • Currently developing custom apps for Offices of Abandoned Mine Lands & Reclamation and Special Reclamation. • Increased TAGIS’ Spatial Applications Development Group from 1 to 2 people doing full time spatial development work in early ‘04.

  7. Accomplishment 3: IFSAR High Resolution Elevation Data Acquisition 30 meter resolution DEM produced from data collected in the 1970s (part of Williams Mountain Quad) 1.25 meter resolution Orthorectified Radar Imagery (ORI) produced from X-band radar data collected in September 2003 by InterMAP

  8. Goal 1: Migrating GIS Data Archive from RAID to a Storage Area Network (SAN) • SAN greatly improves both quantity of data we can store and the speed at which we can serve data to end users. 5 TB. 1 TB.

  9. Goal 2: Airborne Imaging of Active Mining and Abandoned Mine Lands • Color ortho image (red, blue, and green channels) from WVDEP’s airborne imaging system over 96-98 DOQQ.

  10. Goal 3: Take GIS to the Field … Hardware/Software Configurations • Hardware • HP iPAQ with • 128 MB. RAM • Bluetooth • 802.11b Wi-Fi • PCMCIA or Compact Flash Expansion Sleeve • Trimble PocketGPS • Additional data storage • PCMCIA Hard Drive (5 GB.) • Compact Flash (2 GB.) • Secure Data (1 GB.) • Software • ESRI’s ArcPAD 6.0.3 • Trimble’s GPS Correct • GPS Controller

  11. Goal 3: Take GIS to the Field … ArcGIS data Check Out/Check In

  12. Goal 3: Take GIS to the Field … ArcGIS data Check Out/Check In
