  2. Competition • Countries throughout Europe will start competing with one another to be the biggest and best country • This will lead to all the causes of WWI

  3. Militarism • Build up of a countries military • Competition was in the form of military build up • Each power wanted to be the strongest, so they increased their military

  4. Alliances - Secret • Countries formed alliances for protection and strength - If one country gets attacked, the others will get involved • Triple Entente - Great Britain, Russia, and France • Central Powers - Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy

  6. Imperialism • Countries wanted to establish new land or colonies in order to gain wealth and international influence • All about nationalism and competition

  10. The Spark • Tensions were building between Austria-Hungary and Serbia over who should control certain areas • Austria-Hungary’s rising leader, Archduke Ferdinand was shot and killed by a Serbian nationalists • This was the spark that started WWI

  11. Declaration of War • Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia • The alliance system was put in motion when Russia joined Serbia • Germany helpedits ally Austria-Hungary • WWI officially started in 1914
