Proposed Change to General Option • A maximum of nine (9) units may be counted from the following choices towards a CSUSM Master of Arts degree: • Nine (9) units of CSUSM credential program course work • BTSA/Induction units be considered • Nine (9) units of graduate level course work may be transferred from another institution

  14. Master of Arts in EducationGeneral Option Schooling, Culture, and Language Schooling, Culture and Language courses prepare educators to take on leadership roles for social change. Areas of focus may include but are not limited to: multicultural curriculum development; differentiated instruction for English learners; culturally and linguistically diverse students; students with special needs; and working collaboratively with families and communities.

Master of Arts in EducationGeneral Option Schooling, Culture, and Language MA candidates may also earn an optional Multicultural Specialist Certificate by completing the following coursework: EDUC 641: Sociocultural Contexts of Language and Learning (3 units) EDUC 643: Critical Ethnography of Education (3 units) EDUC 644: Multicultural Students and Families in Public Schools (3 units) EDUC 647: Multicultural Curriculum and Application (3 units) TOTAL UNITS REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATE - 12 units

Master of Arts in EducationGeneral Option Science, Mathematics and Educational Technologyfor Diverse Populations Science, Mathematics and Educational Technology for Diverse Populations courses prepare teachers for positions of leadership at the school or district level in the areas of science, mathematics and/or educational technology. This coursework is designed for teachers who wish to strengthen their knowledge and performance or to become educational leaders in science, mathematics and/or educational technology.

Master of Arts in EducationGeneral Option Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Teaching, Learning, and Leadership courses are designed for K-12 teachers in any subject area who wish to enhance their expertise as educators. Course work in this concentration focus upon examining who we teach, how they learn, and developing best teaching practices to meet the needs of all students.

  21. Master of Arts in EducationEducational Administration Option Educational Administration courses prepare siteand district administrators for positions of leadership in the elementary, middle and secondary schools.MA candidates must have three or more years of professional experience.

Master of Arts in EducationEducational Administration Option • Prerequisite Courses EDST 630: Issues & Research in Educational Technology (3 units) or EDUC 422: Technology Tools for Teaching and Learning (3 units)and EDUC 501: Mainstream Instruction for Students with Special Learning Needs (3 units) • 24 units of study in the credential program (EDAD courses) • Additional courses required for the Master of Arts Degree: EDUC 622: Research Methods in Education (3 units) EDUC 698: Master’s Thesis/Project Seminar (3units)

Master of Arts in EducationLiteracy Option Literacy Education courses prepare teachers to assist other teachers and administrators in creating literacy programs that promote not only the learning of reading and writing, but also the learning of subject matter across the curriculum. MA Candidates must have three or more years of professional experience before being awarded the certificate or advanced credential.

Master of Arts in EducationLiteracy Option • 18 units of study required for the Reading Certificate only • 15 additional units of study required for the Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential • 33 total units for Reading Certificate and Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential • 9 additional units of study required for the Master of Arts Degree • 42 total units for Reading Certificate, Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential and Master of Arts in Education, Literacy Option

Master of Arts in EducationSpecial Education Option Special Education courses prepare educators to take on leadership roles in the delivery of special education services to children and youth with identified disabilities. These courses provide an advanced career path in special education to two different categories of teachers.

Master of Arts in EducationSpecial Education Option • Prerequisite Courses EDST 630: Current issues and Research in Educational Technology (3 units) – or completion of SB 2042 program EDUC 501: Mainstream Instruction for Students with Special Learning Needs (3 units) – or completion of SB 2042 program • The following courses or equivalent courses for English Learner Authorization in special education credential: EDUC 602: Schooling in a Multicultural Society (3 units) EDUC 641: Sociocultural Contexts of Language and Learning (3 units) • 22 - 28 units of study in the credential program (EDMX courses) • Additional courses required for the Master of Arts Degree: EDUC 602: Schooling in a Multicultural Society (3 units) EDUC 622: Research Methods in Education (3 units) EDUC 698: Master’s Thesis/Project Seminar (3units)

  27. Master of Arts in EducationSpecial Education Option The Mild/Moderate Education Specialist credential authorizes graduates to serve students in the federal disability categories of Specific Learning Disabilities, Mental Retardation, Serious Emotional Disturbance, and Other Health Impaired (e.g., Attention Deficit Disorder). The Mild/Moderate Education Specialist credential authorizes the provision of services to individuals in grades K through 12, including adult.

  28. Master of Arts in EducationSpecial Education Option The Moderate/Severe Education Specialist credential authorizes graduates to serve students in the federal disability categories of Mental Retardation, Multiple Disability, Autism, Deaf-Blindness, and serious Emotional Disturbance. The Moderate/Severe Education Specialist credential authorizes the provision of services to individuals in grades K through 12, including adult.
