  1. ACP Physics Training Workshop IU July 23-24 • Welcome and Introduction • ACP Physics @ IU • Workshop goals • Workshop schedule

  2. Course Description P221/ACP P221 @ IU • First semester of introductory physics course, • Calculus based, • Designated for physics and science majors, • Focused on basic concepts of classical physics i.e., • - kinematics • - Newtonian dynamics • In P221 students  learn how a simple underlying principle leads to profound consequences. Textbook : Fundamentals of Physics, 6th Edition, by Halliday, Resnick, & Walker (HR&W).

  3. Syllabus • Introductory material, vector analysis, motion in 1 dimension : Chap 1-3 • Kinematics of motion 2 and 3 dimensions : Chap 4 • Newton's Laws of motion, Force and motion : Chap 5-6 • Work, energy, conservation of energy, systems of particles : Chap 7-9 • Collisions : Chap 10 • Rotation, Rolling, Torque, Angular Momentum, Equilibrium and Elasticity : Chap 11-13 • Gravitation : Chap 14 • Solids and Fluids : Chap 15 • Oscillations, Waves, Sound : Chap 16-18 • Thermodynamics, Temperature, Heat, Kinetic Theory of Gases, Entropy : Chap 19-21 Our goal is to fit this syllabus into your school semester

  4. Chapter Summaries • Angular motion • Gravitation • Oscillations • Waves • States of matter • Thermodynamics • Kinetic theory • Measurement • Vectors • Kinematics • Motion in 2 and 3 dim • Force and motion • Work and Energy • Collisions

  5. Demonstrations and other resources • Demos online • Sample lectures : • Motion • Work and Energy • Momentum • Java Applets • IU Demo Web Page • Other links, • … and more

  6. Math level Algebra : scalars, vectors, Calculus : differentials, limits, derivatives of functions of singe variable, higher order derivatives, integrals, series expansion Example : Set up an integral from a sum of differentials, i.e. calculate the moment of inertia of a rigid body

  7. Labs • Introduction to measurement • Sample labs (ACP site) • More from Dan Beeker

  8. Extracurricular activities • Physics Open House • Quark Net • Physics Olympiad

  9. Workshop Goals • Review the syllabus, labs and demonstrations. • Prepare the P221 schedule for your class. • Discuss additional teaching resources and • extracurricular activities.
