  2. Presentation Objectives • Describe how Nova Scotia is coming together to address the issue of smoking during pregnancy • Discuss some of our learnings from that process

  3. Background • Motivated by Expecting to Quit • In 2005 25% of women in NS were smoking during pregnancy • 50% relapse rate within 1 year of pregnancy • 3 year Health Canada funding $80 k.

  4. Project Goal • to build capacity and generate action around a best practice approach to pregnancy and tobacco

  5. Framework for Action

  6. What we did (1)…. • Engaged community • Needs assessment – conversations - buzz! • Developed foundation of expertise • Lit review – relationships with experts • Built interest, awareness and skills • Multiple methods - 160 people trained

  7. What we did (2)…. • Researched and adapted tools • Windsor Guide – wipeboard • Engaged partners from outside DHA • SSA Advisory Committee – tobacco control community – Pregnets – AWARE (STARSS) • Involved the Province • Health Promotion & Protection - Reproductive Care Program

  8. What we did (3)…. • Created a community of practice • Involving all 9 districts –listserve (www.ptsn.ca) • Got senior-management onside & inspired • Shared our learnings • List-serve, conferences, website, articles • Found a way to support FRC’s in their work with women who smoke

Supporting Women To Quit 5-part, case-based teleheath series, held over 5 months 11 locations in 9 districts Mainpro- M-1 Credits Dr. Peter Selby (CAMH / Pregnets) Interactive – participation built interest and community “Supporting Women to Quit Tobacco Use During Pregnancy and Beyond” Practical, Case-Based Telehealth Training Series for Professionals who Work with Women Presenter: Dr. Peter Selby(Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, Toronto) Series will address key issues including best practices, a woman centred approach, motivational interviewing and special needs of the pregnant woman who uses tobacco. Facilitated  Participatory  Free Refreshments  Prizes  Telehealth Locations: Kentville Yarmouth Bridgewater Halifax – IWK New Glasgow Antigonish Sydney (CB Regional) Toronto Middleton Truro Amherst Inverness Dates: Oct 2 Monday 10 00 - 11:30 Nov 20 Monday 10:00 - 11:30 Jan 22 Monday 10:00 - 11:30 Feb 12 Monday 10:00 - 11:30 For Inquiries please contact: Public Health Services at (902) 542-6310 Fax Registration Forms to (902) 542-4919 An initiative of South Shore Health Pregnancy and Tobacco Project, in partnership with provincial DHAs, Public Health Services and Addiction Services with support from Health Canada After session 1: “This has already changed my practice.”
