  3. Current Law and the debate • Law against cellphone use while driving • 17 years old and younger: no use of cellphone • 18 years old and older: limited use • Is the law enough? • Stricter to include all distracted driving • Eliminate the law altogether

  4. Increase Strictness • Senate File 33 • Repeal current law • Include all forms of distracted driving • “I’ve seen individuals eating bowls of cereal, I’ve seen men combing their hair, I’ve seen women putting makeup on...” (Bright, Globe Gazette). • Funding • Revenue from fines • Enacting new laws expensive • U.S Dept. of Transportation Grant program

  5. Eliminate Current Law • Broad definition of distracted driving • Tod Bowman worries, “the bill’s definition is so broad that someone could get pulled over for eating a hamburger…” (“Iowa Senate Bill”) • Increase in racial profiling • The types of laws are ineffective • Increases distraction for drivers • Highway Loss Data Institute study

  6. Mediated Compromise • Leave the current law alone • Too broad • Increase consequences • Increase public awareness and educate drivers • Drivers Education classes • Seminars on distracted driving
