  1. Unit 4 - Inequalities

  2. Outcomes: Represent the solution sets to inequalities in the following formats: • Graphically • Symbolically • With Words

  3. Recall… • Natural Number (N)– start at one, no decimals • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… • Whole Number (W) – start at zero, no decimals • 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… • Integers (I) – positive & negative numbers and zero, no decimals • …-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4… • Real Number (R) – all numbers, including decimals

  4. Write the possible solutions to the following: • Whole numbers greater than 4 and less than 12 • Integers greater than -3 and less than or equal to 4 • Real numbers greater than 1 and less than 3

  5. Symbols • The symbols that you need to know for this section are: < less than > greater than ≤ less than or equal to ≥ greater than or equal to ε “belongs to”

  6. All of the integers higher than -3 and less than or equal to 2 Symbols: { x | -3 < x ≤ 2, xε I } Graphically: Written: All of the values of x, where x is more than -3 and less than or equal to 2, and include numbers from the set of integers

  7. All real numbers higher than -2.5 and less than or equal to 3 Symbols: Graphically: Written:

  8. Symbols: { x | -10 ≤ x < 8, xε R } • Graphically: • Written:

  9. Symbols: Graphically: Written: Situation:
