  2. What is a photogram? • Filmless print made without a camera. • Place objects on photo paper and expose to light, usually with an enlarger. • Paper developed, like any print.

  3. Value Scale White is pure white and black is pure black Everything between are shades of gray 3 6 9 12 15 White might be zero to a few seconds, black could be 15, 18, 21, or more seconds Of exposure under the enlarger. Start at f/11 and go wider if necessary.

  4. To get pure white on your photo paper, objects must be solid. Light will leak around edges creating a gray tone. This is not acceptable. Try something metal, try your cellphone. • Many objects that appear solid may not be truly solid. • Instructor has examples of solid objects you can use.

  7. Exercise • 1 Value Strip with at least 3 gray tones, PLUS white and black • Use to determine exposure times for photogram 2. Black and white photogram • Arrange on 8x10 to achieve black background with pure white objects, NO GRAY 3. Black, white, 2 tones of gray • Arrange on 8x10, cut exposure time in half, rearrange some items, complete the time. Example: total exposure time 18 secon 4. Create your own.

  8. What’s due? • Total of 4 things turned inside a 10x13 envelope with your name on the back of each print and on the outside of the envelope • 3 8x10 prints • 1 value scale

  10. How to complete • Check out darkroom basics for photogram using your current VVC ID card. No card, no equipment. • Be sure the negative carrier is in the enlarger. • Cut full sheet of photo paper in 3 or 4 lengths. These are for your value strip. Put them back into the light tight plastic bag. • Using the modeling light, set aperture to f/11 • Be sure model light is OFF before you open your photo light tight bag and remove the strip

  11. Insert photo strip, shiny side up, under the class • Cover all but 1/5th of the paper with cardboard. • Set timer for 3 seconds. Start the timer, the light will come on. • Move the cardboard another 1/5 and repeat until on 1/5 of the paper is unexposed. • Develop • Check strip with instructor. Repeat with long times if necessary.
