  2. Impersonal “se” • Seen most often on signs in Spanish • Directs people to do/not to do certain things or advertises things that are/ aren’t available, allowed, permitted, etc • Impersonal because the message is intended for people in general, not one specific person.

  3. Verbs often used with impersonal “se” • Se vende/ se venden • No se vende(n) • Se permite/ se permiten • No se permite(n) • Se prohíbe/ Se prohíben • Se habla • Is for sale/ is sold • Is not for sale/sold • Is permitted • Is not permitted • Is prohibited • Is spoken

  6. How to use impersonal “se”: • Each verb only has 2 forms: él & ellos. • Use se + the él form with singular nouns and infinitives: • Se vendeuna casa (House for sale) • Se prohíbefumar (Smoking prohibited) • No se permitenadar (No swimming) • Se hablaespañol (Spanish spoken here)

  7. Use se + the ellos form with plural nouns: • Nose vendenbicicletas • Bicycles are not sold here • Se vendenhamburguesas • Hamburgers are sold here • Se prohíbenlos sombreros • Hats are prohibited • No se permitenlos animales • Animals not allowed
