  2. Duringacommonoperation & maintenance practice, Ihavenoticedthatinvarious plantsforchangingthedirectionofLow Tensionmotorsthatarebelow15KWs, the phasesequenceinsidethepanel (the terminalsbelowthepowercontactoror belowthermaloverloadrelay) isnormally changedasshowninthepictureabove. Nowinthefuture, iftheremightbesome probleminthesamefeederandwhenit getshardtosolvetheproblem, the maintenancepersonnelwillreplacethe feedermotorwithasparemotorofthe sameratingtogettheplantworkingASAP. But, thereisverylittlechancethathe noticesthatinthesparefeederdirectionof cableisR, Y, andB. IftheMaintenance Engg. orTech. hasnoticedit, thentheywill changeasperrunningfeederandthenonly givestartclearance, butyouwillreplacethe runningfeederwithsparefeederonlywhen thereisurgencyandduringthosetimes, we haveseenthatEngg. OrTech. misses checkingthedirectioninsidethefeeder whichwillresultinrotationofthemotorin thewrongdirection. Nowthatrotationin thewrongdirectioncanbehazardousor non-hazardous. Itmayincreasethe downtime, oritmaydamageafew componentsofequipment, oritmaycause near-misstothefieldpersonneloritmay causeaseriousaccident. Ultimately somethingwillbelost. Themainreasonforchangingpowercable fromtheRelay & Powercontactorsideis thatitwillbesavingmoretime (man-hour) thanchangingthecablesdirectlyonthe motorterminalside. But, bydoingthis, we areinvitinga “NearMiss” situation, which maynotonlydamagethemotorbutcasea serveraccidentwithlife-threatening situations. Thishappensnormallyinprocess industries, wheretherearemanyidentical motorswiththesamerating. Thesemotors areusedforsimilarapplicationsandthere arepoweredbythesameMCC. Also, there canbesimilarmotorsfordifferent applicationsinthesameMCC. Now, forexample, consideranMCCwhere thereare9Nos5.5kWDOLstarterfeeder, 8 isused (4forFan, 2forscrewconveyorand 2forbeltconveyerwithgearboxand1is spare. WhenevertheMCCismanufactured, thepowercablewiringinallthefeeders willbeR, Y & Bonly (FromLefttoright). DuringO&Morplantshutdown, manytimes itmightoccurthatduetoplant requirementsorduetosomeproblemin theequipmentwemustchangethe directionofmotors. Inordertodothisinan easyway, theengineerortechnicians changethedirectionofthemotorby changingthepowercablesequencebelow therelayorpowercontactor. Alsoattimes, whenwearereplacingthemotorwitha newmotorandwhiletakingano-loadtrial, wefoundthatthedirectionofthenew motorisreversed, soweinterchangetheR & YpowercablebelowRelayorPower contactorasitislesshecticandtakeless time. Nowourmotorisrunninginthe correctdirectionbutinsidethefeedercable isY, RandBcombination. Hence, wealwaysrecommendwhile changingthedirectionofMotor (Forbelow 15kW) fromafeeder, wemustdoitfrom thepanelterminationsideasmarkedin Photo.
