Importance of Vermin Proofing and Periodic Maintenance in HT and LT Panels

Vermin is a term that we use for animals, mostly reptiles and birds which cause significant damage or annoyance. These animals love to set up their house in the nooks and crannies where control and protection wiring are housed. These small creatures try to get inside such nooks and corners and sometimes get stuck in electrical machines/installations thereby causing unbearable damages. Of course, they die too!

  2. Verminisatermthatweuseforanimals, mostlyreptilesandbirdswhichcause significantdamageorannoyance. These animalslovetosetuptheirhouseinthe nooksandcrannieswherecontroland protectionwiringarehoused. Thesesmall creaturestrytogetinsidesuchnooksand cornersandsometimesgetstuckin electricalmachines/installationsthereby causingunbearabledamages. Ofcourse, theydietoo! DuringthemaintenanceofoneVCBof11kV panelboard, wefoundtwomiceinsidethe circuitbreakerwhichweredead. The questionthatcomestoourmindisasto howthesetwomicetraveledtoan11kV bus? Ifthesystemwasn’tcheckedorthe maintenancehadbeenneglected, these twomicecouldhaveledtothebreakdown ofthesystemresultinginlacksorinfact corersofdamage. Ofcourse, therecould havebeenariskofthelifeofindividuals workingattheplantaswell. Besides, this couldhaveledtothe transfer/suspension/terminationofthe membersfromthemaintenanceteamasa consequence. Incertainplantswhereweserved/visited, wehavenoticedamouse, lizard, snake, etc. inElectricalSwitchgearand InstrumentationPanels. Asapartofservice, wecheckcompleteSwitchgears. HTPanel & LTPanelmaintenanceisdonewhich includesRelayTesting, Breakerservicing, andtesting, controlpanelcleaningand tightening, CT & PTtesting.   3. Whenenquired, themaintenanceEngineers saidthattheyhadappliedaluminumtape andpuffsealatvariousholesinsidethe panelaround2.5yearsback. On investigatingfurther, itwasfoundthat whileapplyingaluminumtapeforthe panel, thepersonmighthaveforgottento cleanthebasewherethetapewasapplied. Improperadhesivecontactwiththepanel couldbethereasonformicetoenterthe paneleasily. Therewerearound50panels butonlyonepanelwasfoundwiththiskind ofproblemleavinganerrormarginof2%. However, thiscouldhavecausedthe marginallyhigherloss. Inanothersuchinstance, during maintenanceofan11kVpanelboard, we foundadeadandhalf-burntsnakeinside thebreakerchamber. Onbeingenquired, themaintenanceteamsaidthattheydidn’t getthechancetocheckthecomplete panelinthelastshutdownduetothe unavailabilityofrequiredskilledmanpower. Theyalsotoldusthatthelimitedperiodof theshutdownandtheentirepanelcubical waschecked3yearsback. Inthiscase, out of35panels, onlyonepanelwasfound whereverminproofingwasbreached. Again theerrormarginwasof2% andthistoo couldhavecausedthemarginallyhigher loss. www.systemprotection.in +91-265-2225137

Thewordofcautionforallthemaintenance teammembersistochecktheSwitchgear Panelsduringeveryannualshutdownor completecleaning; servicingand maintenanceofHTPanelsshouldbedone every2yearstoensuresafetyandsurety. Thistypeofcheckonregularintervalsisnot possibleincaseofBusbarasitsaltogether adifferentissueandrequiresheavy planningforthecompleteblackout. Suchinstanceshelpusunderstandthe importanceofverminproofingofthepanel thatmustbedoneappropriatelyandpanels mustbecheckedperiodicallywithoutfail. Negligenceinsuchcasescouldposeserious threatstoelectricalinstallationsandpeople workingattheplant. Besides, thiscould directlyleadtoincurringheavylossesin monetarytermstoo. AlmosteveryplantgoesforRelayTesting andBreakerservicingeveryyearthrough thethirdparty. Aspartofserviceand cleaning, controlwiringsimulationand tightening, cleaningofcompletepanel cubical (frontandrear), CT & PTtesting (if needed) shouldbedone. Forthis, Testing/ServiceEngineertakestechnicians andhelpersfromthecontractorandthen withthehelpofindentcleaner, brush, scrubs, blower, toolkitslikescrewdriverset, spannerset, etc. getsthetaskdone. www.systemprotection.in +91-265-2225137
