  1. Science for High SpeedRailways in Poland Jerzy Kisilowski, Prof. Full PhD DSc. President of the Steering Team on High Speed Rail (KDP) Transport Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences

  2. Transport as a field of science at the Polish Academy of Sciences appeared in the second half of the eighties. This area brings together a range of scientific disciplines that lead research, education and implementation work for transport. How numerous is this scientific environment?Certain criterion is the fact that 115 professors identifying themselves with the scientific discipline of transport participated in the choice of the Committee on Transport Sciences. Currently 32 units are associated with the issue of Transport; Departments in Universities, Research Institutes. In those units work more than 300 doctors, dealing with scientific issues of transport.

  3. In May 2009, the Department IV of the Polish Academy of Science and Transport Committee established a Team to develop the material "Scientific and educational conditions for the implementation of High SpeedRailways in Poland."The Team work ended with the preparation of the material, which was accepted by the Transport Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

  4. The developed material formulated the basic task of the scientific community in terms of: Research tasks (five areas) Technical aspects of the implementation of High Speed Railways. In this task are listed in detail the surface issues, cooperation of the rolling stock with the surface, power systems, traction and propulsion, motion control systems, automation and communications. Logistics and management. This area covers both the area associated with the design, construction of the KDP system and the post-launch operational processes period. Operating of the KDP. Financial and economic issues. Legal issues. Educational program - training of staff on the I, II, III level.Ultimately, the substantive structure of research themes related to the KDP was proposed (fig.1).

  5. A number of universities have undertaken concrete organisational actions to the issues of KDP. To this group I would rank: Technical University of Radom - the university Centre for Sustainable High Speed Railways was established, specialist training programs were prepared and implemented in the field of KDP, at the level of engineer, masters and PhD. Two research programs were prepared: one in the field of control and telecommunications, the other in cooperation between the rolling stock and the surface; Lodz Technical University where the Centre of Railway was established; In other universities activity is expressed in current operations connected with KDP problems – without dispensing separate structures.

  6. In making an attempt to implement many tasks of KDP, an important link is the Railway Institute (Instytut Kolejnictwa), where basic materials were prepared, which composed: the preparation of a Government resolution on Y - so is called the first rail line to be built for the High SpeedRailways (KDP). The Institute has been very proactive in the development of a feasibility study of Y; highlighting the requirements, the leading position of the Railway Institute in the field of track structure - particularly the work of Professor Henryk Baluch.

  7. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is what I would like to present on the current status of the relationship between science and the KDP. I think that not all initiatives have been mentioned, and I am convinced that the newly elected Transport Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (21 professors of different disciplines) will continue the started work with specifying many concepts presented.

  8. Thank You for Attention
